Interesting how Tea Party types have anointed Reagan as Saint Ronny, the inspiration for their movement. If he were around today, they'd be dumping all over him and looking for someone to run against him, for not being a true conservative.

Don't get me wrong; I didn't like him (politically speaking). But at least he had a grasp on reality... he compromised to get things done, raised taxes when he had to, and not only talked to our enemies but negotiated with them.

    From Wikipedia, on taxes:
Yes, those increases should be looked at in context, keeping in mind that he left office with taxes significantly lower overall than they were when he came in -- but TP'ers refuse to do that today; they just blindly chant their 'no new taxes' mantra.

And the GOP pol's are scared to buck them. Remember the debate where every single presidential nominee said they'd turn down a deal that included one dollar of hikes for every ten dollars worth of cuts? That's kowtowing to fanatics, in my opinion.

Well, I'd go to a performance of hers in Cleveland, if I happened to be there...:)

You are, of course, wrong. Ronald the Great's legacy stands as a monument and standard for our current candidates to measure up to. The Republican establishment had better get that message if they want the candidates they put forth to have any hope of winning.

Reagan wouldn't recognize his supposed legacy if he came back today. Nor would the people who supposedly idolize Reagan recognize him....;)

If someone had offered him a ten-for-one deal, he'd have done the arithmetic and taken it in a heartbeat. No one ever accused him of being a mathematical genius, but he was smart enough to know that coming out nine ahead beats a stalemate any day.

Why would anyone take any notice of anything an entertainer said about politics? It's not like they need a brain to be an entertainer, after all.

Same level of credibility as a ships captain pontificating on science and the world conspiracy theories, really.

Ronny beat the Russians into submission in the cold war by convincing them he had weapons in space along with the 50 year old scam that the US had alien technology captured at Roswell.
He was an ideas man like any true CEO

    dry senses of humor

    PDW and Troy,

It is possible you guys are misjudging the dryness of Hoyt's sense of humor.

Or maybe I am misjudging exactly how dry both of yours are ?

I don't blame Old Yo for being upset with Betty, she was pretty hot in her day, according to my Father. He is 86 and still helping me in my shop, in spite of his bad knees.

I do appreciate a good dry joke, I inherited the trait (along with my respect for the Truth and impatience with BS) from my Dad.

Ooooh this is an interesting conversation.

Is this stuff for real or are we making it up.

I heard that Kruschoff made kennedy cry. He leaned over at dinner and said something,----it wasnt "pass the salt"

Well, the USSR did go bankrupt and fall apart considerably before the USA, which seems to be still working up to that condition.

The way I read it, Ronnie *spent* the USSR into collapse.

Argue how you will, the USSR is a dead political entity and that's a fact.

You don't think I take anything in this sub-forum seriously, do you? I'm just killing time while my laptop does the real work in another window.

Crikey! Now, today, this minute Russia will not allow UN escalation of interference in Syria. How much clout is that!!

It wont have reached the library yet, you'lle need a TV or internet connection.

If you think being a successful entertainer clear up into your nineties takes no brains, you need to think again. No one lasts that long at any profession without having some sort of a head on their shoulders.

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean her expertise in her chosen field also also qualifies her as an expert in politics... but you can call her wrong without calling her an idiot.

His head --was simply on his wifes shoulders. Ronnie could not speak without Nancy at his side prompting him from the side of her mouth. She was rarely withing a meter from him at all times.

Is that a world leader with a big red button.
