Wing Foils Below Waterline

Here is pic of model with wing P-shopped in. Rough...just to give idea of narrow hull and placement. It also shows new bow shape, not dreadnought, not plumb...and open center, to compare with with orig in second pic.

I ended up with this shape sort of by trial and error. Plans call for balsa or pine bow block, and I decided the long overs might invite some hobbying, so I lengthened water line, now will have to figure out how to make the bow station vertical to ease the pain of shaping a big chunk of laminated wood. Either way, a job.


How does the Arup rudder handle all that lift pressure?

It uses a rudder t-foil(for foil assist-not full flying) like the I-14 and National 12, and some Cherubs-the major difference being that on the Arup the foil is at the bottom of the rudder rather than about halfway down on the other two for better high speed performance. The reason to have the foil half way down(approx.) is to attempt to recover energy from the stern wave. Structurally, just like the other boats, the foils are made of carbon. It took me a bit but I did go over the PDF and Tom Speer's references...


Crazy as it is, the T-foil data and Speer's material got me thinking, why not a full length or near full length wing shape, when the hull is very narrow, as on the MO? Long and narrow vs short and wide...considering less need for maneuverability and more straight line.

 

Doug, I may be slow, but try...yes, I finally realized the wings would be too wide and only going to widen the bottom a hair and maybe add curved foils, if I can work it out construction-wise. Otherwise, will stick to basics, and maybe jiggy the sail plan a bit is all. Your comments on hull were very helpful. Thanks. Kinda fun, planning these changes.
