Hello all, I'm new to this form, but not to boats. Have had lots of outboard, and outdrive boats, but this is my first run with twin inboards. here is the boat:
28' Carver Mariner, Twin 350's with Velvet drive and V-Drives

    Here is the Issue!
I bought the boat with the port motor blown. I got a long block and put her back together, got the motor running and at the dock checked forward and reverse with no issues, after adjusting carb and getting everything the way i wanted it, I put her in forward, Still at the dock, and let her idol for about 5 min, when i tried to go back to neutral it was real hard, when she Finlay came outa gear she went right into reverse, took awhile to get her back to neutral! well after that reverse works just fine, however when u put her in forward u can feel it start to engage about half way then quits. If i play with shifter real easy i can get her to go into forward, but if i give it any gas it slips out.

what could cause this prob? and will a seal kit fix it? also i am quite mechanical, is this a job i can tackle on my own?

sounds like a shifter or cable problem. have you tried engaging gears with the cable disconnected. i bet it is cable adjustment. i have owned a lot of velvet drives and they rarely give any trouble apart from the odd leaking seal.

no worrys, i thought it was worth a mention because more often than not it is the problem. i think from memory you can remove and clean the pressure relief and shift spool but it has been a while. rebuild kits are cheap because there are not a lot of parts in there.

i had this happen before for.there was crap in the oil jamming things up. there wasnt much but enough to make docking really fun on a windy day. i pulled the gear took it to the shop and had it cleaned/flushed....i cant remember for sure but i think it was some roten rubber from a seal that caused the problem..it wasnt expensive to get fixed but then again the was over 10 years ago..lol
