Hi, everyone my name is Dylan, I am based in South Africa and work as a Marine/Corrosion Engineer. I also buy and sell boats as a "hobby". I recently bought and stripped a dying 50ft ferro cement yacht which came with a practically brand new TMD31 Volvo Penta plus velvet drive Marine engine/gearbox. The engine was installed by Volvo agents and only logged 6hrs before the yacht came out the water and was soon after condemned. I bought the yacht and stripped the engine out and sold the rest.

I am now sitting with a 120Hp turbo engine and gearbox and am looking for the right Workboat type design to build to suit the engine, I am looking for something that can do extended offshore trips in the 32-42ft range. When I say workboat i mean basic fittings/interior etc to keep the cost down. Steel is the obvious choice as my family owns a metal fabrication factory with just about everything one would need. we have already built 2 45ft steel sailing yachts. My experience is limited on Power Boats. I am happy with 6-10knts, very basic interior, and would like some deck space for offshore fishing and diving. Ideally Im looking for a design that would be ultra simple to manufacture... any ideas ??? I have looked at loads of boats on google but havent come across the right one yet, thought someone here might be able to help.

    Hi Dylan,

Is that the one in Richards Bay ? - Is there any lead left ? - What about the mast ? -

About your project, most economical would be to buy a boat in need of an engine I guess..

If want to build new, don't know the style you're looking for . . ? ?

Maybe something like the Power Cruiser 36 from Chesapeake Marine Design . . ? ?

Other styles are also possible with this design, check the text in the link.

    Good luck !

    P.S. - An other one, Coastal Passage 30 / 34.

    Hi Angel,

Yes that was one of the boats at Richards Bay, Name NANDI her current owner is stripping whats left to re-build another ferro boat. There are 2 masts 18m 13m both in really good condition and about +-5tons lead still in the boat. Not sure when the owner will be stripping these out.

Thank you for the ideas, had a look at website and really like the look of the Power Cruiser 36. I have the engine up for sale but its quite large for most boats so thought i would go the route of getting a boat for it. These kinds of designs are few and far btw here in RSA. So building is sometimes easier. Its just a thought at this stage as i would only have the time and funds towards the end of the year to start any kind of build.

How do you know about the boats here in Zululand?

About the lead, if the rebuild project of the current owner is smaller there might be a surplus in the ± 5 tons of lead. Or if that boat already is ballasted the whole lot might be for sale. I know a guy who needs a little bit (± 170 kg) although he's thinking about using steel now. He's about 650 km NW of Richards Bay so I guess we're talking about sending it over if it's available and if he's interested and if there's going to be a deal. He might also be interested in the top end of one of the masts, but that's just my guess.

I'll send him a message, if he's interested I think he will respond on this thread or e-mail you trough the forum, hope you will put him in contact with the owner.

Looking at the map, isn't Richards Bay located in uThungulu district just south of Zululand district? Or is term Zululand also a synonym for the whole province of KwaZulu-Natal, or are the areas of the former KwaZulu homeland meant which at the time didn't include Richards Bay I think . . ? ?

I don't know boats in Richards Bay but took a shot at ferro-cement boats in SA for the location of the boat and this one in Richards Bay was among the ones that popped up, she could be within the size range and definitely is dying or dead already, but she isn't a ketch as I understand from your last post, so I landed in the right place by coincidence . . . :)

Anyway, this one definitely is also a candidate for scrapping and her only value is in stripping out the lead, and if of any good, the engine, transmission, mast, winches, sails, prop, etc... but there will be also the cost of scrapping and disposal of the rest material...

    Good luck !

P.S. - Ah, just found what area is meant by the Zululand region . . :)

‘‘ The Zululand region of KwaZulu-Natal is a Zulu-dominated area that extends along the coast of the Indian Ocean from the Tugela River in the south to the Pongola River in the north. ’’

It would not be typical for a Ferro boat to have lead ballast, more usual to use cement and steel punchings, rebar etc. Worth a look though, you may get lucky.
