Last voyage for Costa Concordia cruise ship

The vessels Thialff and Sapeim 7000 can lift 14,200 tons and 14,000 tons respectively. They have two cranes each. They would not need to lift the ship out of the water but to control it. There must be enough sealed compartments to get a lot of air into the ship to keep it floating while they work it free of the rocks. It would be a huge undertaking, but nothing is impossible. They could probably get in close if the rock shelves away steeply.

 

Their draft increases substantially when they start lifting, and loading on the ballast, but it would be quite amazing to see both shps, Thialf and Saipem, with all 4 cranes working together to right the Costa Concordia.

 

These issues were already discussed in length and in depth in this thread, including the fact that several official media appear (and some have claimed) to have used data and discussions from this forum as their source of technical info. You just have to read the 1000+ posts written so far.

 

Better remove it

It'd be safer to remove or sink CC into deeper water.

Else another Carnival Cruise ship might collide with it, then claim it was not on their charts?

 

Or lose power and just drift onto it.

More notes indicate that Captain Schettino "forgot" his glasses in his cabin, and could not see the radar screen well.

It also indicates that the captain had instructed the crew to mislead the Livorno Harbormaster about the damage.

 

The captain of this 1800 ton bunker vessel went down with his ship today after hitting a submerged wreck. All other 10 crew were safely recovered.

Moral of the story,
Don't stand above a closed compartment rigged with explosives.

I just can't imagine that they wouldn't have rigged remotes. Perhaps even disposible WIFI cameras to monitor the explosives or progress of the sinking.
