Planing Hull Benchmark

    Hi, I am pretty new in this field, but I am currently into a project in designing a planing hull.
    The project itself will use CFD in calculating the resistance (which will be compared to towing test result).
    Before going to the real thing, I would like to test the software (and user which is me :D) in simulating a planing hull, my problem is that I cannot find any planing hull example (complete with standard resistance, sinkage, trim result) which I can use as a basic testcase for early simulation.
    There are many other boat test case though, but I would like to do high speed simulation, so I will prefer finding a planing hull test case.
    So any idea guys?

    Hi,
    try to get this paper: "Resistance tests of a systematic series of planing hull forms", SNAME Trans. 1963, 71, 491-579. 13, Clements, J. C., Blount, D. L. , should be usefull for Your purpose.

    Is it just for calm water resistance?

    It's a famous and complete series of towing tank tests on parent planing hulls model with sistematic variation of aspect ratio (5 models), tested with variations in longitudinal CG position, different displacements, etc., tests are performend in calm water. All numerical and graphics results are reported.

    I am still looking for the paper that Kestrel suggest to me, anyone would like to share it to me?

    What I can find for the moment is the Davidson Lab report by Gerard Fridsma, "A systematic study of the rough-water performance of planing boats."
    Do you guys think this is report a possible approach?

    well, as i recall it, Fridsma tried to describe the rough water performance by calculating it with a mathematical method. I dont know if this is usefull for CFD calculations, as it is for planing hulls. If i were you, I would restrict myself by just looking for calm water resistance.

    Yes, Fridsma tried to describe the rough water performance, but it was based on calm water performance. So he tested all the model in calm water first which he provided all the results (free to trim and heave resistance test) in the report. But somehow I don't find any other people trying to reproduce his result in CFD, at least for basic comparison since it is not a practical hull shape.

    perhaps its a good idea to calculate the resistance of youre ship by Savitsky's calculation. That way you have a good empirical calculation method and, if you find the right paper, a number of parent hull form. so two flys in one swing, as we say in the Netherlands ;).
