Replacement Core Material

    The companionway hatch in my fiberglass sailboat is becoming soft and on opening the fiberglass shell I found the foam core material is crumbling away. Some locals have suggest replacing the core material with plywood but that would certainly add some weight. Any suggestions for a long lasting, lightweight, stable core material for this type of repair.

    How much core is damaged? If it is significant then foam or balsa is the favorite, if it just around the edge I usually seal the remaining core after drying it, then fill with thickened epoxy.

    Looks like it will be a full replacement of the foam core. The original material just crumbles. Thanks for your comments.
