I'm repowering my 31' sedan and while everything is apart I am considering changing the shaft seals to packless type. But I have read care must be taken if and engine fails because it could burn the PSS. It is recommended to run a crossover water line between the two in case an engine fails.

So, now with new type dripless flax packing now available, maybe this should be considered instead of the PSS. Which would be better, dripless flax packing or PSS?

I think I am leaning toward the dripless flax packing.

there is all sorts of drip less shaft seals and i like them.some look more stout than others but they have all been cool to me with very few problems.I have seen one that has reseviors full of ATF lubing them slowly,I have seen them without lip seals at all and its a stainless steal disk on the shaft pressed fermly up against a springy bellow that has a grafite or ceramic seal on the end of it.I have seen them out of bronze, stainless, and wimpy looking plastic and I like them all becase you dont need to F with them.Regular old flax packing is cool if you can get to the damn stuffing box and you cover the thing well with a split hose or a soda bottle. As for as a drip less flax goes i havent seen it around but it sounds good to me but i recomend the other dripless seals there nice man.Dont sweat them burning out just hook them up the way they tell you to and go fishing allready.
