From memory she was built in Kawhia. I had a copy of the Seaspray article but it has since disappeared.

Good to see drawings like these. 3d is great, but there's something in these that speaks to me too.

Would be nice if the old Clae is still around. Would lend some charm.

Yes it was kind of cool in it's annoying way. Cranking made for some funny times.

DACHRST, did you buy her from Tga. when she was in our Sulpher Point yard a cockie from Taneatua owned her. I know she was seriously slow but like most good boats, she got there eventually.I have some info on the Central Launch and Engine Co. Balmain East. They made both single and twin cyl. engines. Astrid probably had a twin judging by the size of the prop.

Probably the guy who was cranking it made some funny noises too! Wonder where the engine went. I doubt if anybody other than me would be interested in keeping old petrol engines in boats.

She was in Westhaven when we bought her. I could have sworn it was a single I will get hold of my old partner and double check.

well, here is a pic of the most popular of the CLAE (Central Launch and Engine Co. Balmain , Sydney. The FS 6hp and FS 12 twin cylinder. There are still plenty around as they were built for workboats.

and here is another design motor sailer from A.W.B. The "Dawn Lady"
    Thanks to Mark nz

Hey Mark, where did you get the photo of 'Dawn Lady'? Are you a previous owner?

Hi Gunnie, yes a great little boat. I owned her from 2006-2008. She is down in your neck of the woods now, near Picton.

I understand she was built down that way, if you have any information I would be keen to hear from you as her history was always a bit sketchy on detail.

    Athol Burns Work

    Hi Mark,
I had not realised you had her so recently. Unusual for a boat to have a petrol engine in modern times. Do you recall if that engine was salt water cooled. Would like to track it down if possible. I would think that any owner now would replace it with a hi revving diesel and probably scrap it or leave it aside. If it was raw seawater cooled, the salt build up will expand and wreck the water passages. Cheers

Hi Russell, sorry there is a bit of a cross thread thing happening here. Just to clarify, it was Dawn Lady that I owned, not Astrid!

Dawn Lady has a twin cylinder Volvo MD11C diesel, 23hp.

Ray has since uncovered some more info on Astrid though. It seems her 4hp CLAE was replaced by an 8hp Stuart Turner in 1966, and she was built by a G. Gould in 1954. This is possibly George Gould who was evidently a well known yachting identity in Kawhia.

    Tantalus 1963 kauri cruiser

We were out cruising this last week and spent a few nights in Te Kouma. Loved seeing Dolly J, an Athol Burns lovely little motor sailer sailing onto her anchor for the night!
