I was looking over some of my thoughts on this and am struck by what we ask of our forces and how we ask them.

    This is from WWII:

I have one of the documents prepared by the photo recon corps where my parents worked during the war- it has a 'grotesque' on the cover where the Japanese are pictured as apelike forces being run over by our ships in the pacific.
I will post if I can find the pamphlet.

This is a photo from the period of fooling around with the dead:

I remember almost choking when Bush called on young men to go into Iraq to 'kill those terrorists'.

Following 911 I am not surprised to see some out of bounds behavior in our young people sent into conflict.
Not excusable, but understandable given the circumstances.

I have not been to war.
I appears we send men to war and need to ask that civility be left at home.

The public are not qualified to make judgment on those they send to war.

Killing is not the same as riveting, as Rambo 1 tried to explain.

Sometimes to defend your own borders you must mount an expeditionary force. The attacks on America were mounted from Afghanistan so Afghanistan had to bleed.

It sucks to attack America. We could have melted the Afghanistan had we wanted to.

Now you're just reasoning with guts, Hoyt.

The USA would probably do it would if it could, but it can't. As powerful as it might seem, it is not the only nation on this planet and (just like any other country in this world) has to deal with other nations before taking a military action of this size.

So melting or nuking the Afghanistan was and is out of question at any moment.

Americas is supposedly the most powerful nation in the world and Afganistan has to be the weakest.

    Feel proud do we?

I do agree with Daiquiri: unacceptable behaviour. As officer I wouldn't tolerate any conduct of this kind (and I has been officer in the French Navy).

And the "savagery" of the enemy do not give any excuse to behave as him. If you become also a "savage" that means that you're at the end sharing the same values of the enemy. So finally he morally won: you became like him...

It's a fundamental question of ethics. For those that do not know the word, ask Bush and Rumsfeld, they are specialists in ethics...

These guys are totally dumb, stupid and uneducated. Making a video and sharing it in Internet show the high intelligence of this band of idiots. Poor U.S. army...no brains.
Nobody has won a war in Afganistan; the English and the Soviets have already made the the hard experience.

What must be done to stop the violence permeating all our media, TV, vid games, school classrooms, sport? It seems in our quest for individual rights we have made violence on each other legitimate. This month here a 21yr old female was attacked by a group 12 to 14yr olds. A pregnant woman was attacked in a dairy store by another woman whom she allegedly had never met before. It is out of control. The judiciary slap them with a wet bus ticket. The bleeding heart brigade say the perpetrators are victims too!
We have to harden up and meet this head on. Respect has to be engendered at birth.
Utube should be policed with an iron fist. Glorified violence on any animal is not acceptable.

Attacks must be punished else the perpetrators will think they have impunity.

P155ing on dead terrorists is poor PR. Better not to do it. Okay to make them dead but just don't p155 on them. It's an insult to the p155.

We could have nuked them if we had wanted to but we were trying to free them not destroy them.

Freeing people is low on current regime's priority list.

No Hoyt, you couldn't. Just like you can't nuke Iran or North Korea or any other country in the world. Nobody can, without terrific consequences for its own nation. Nuclear weapon is the most useless weapon ever conceived. It is like a gun which shots both ways, to the target and to the shooters head. There's a good reason why it was used just twice and never again since the WWII, with all the conflicts that have raged over the planet in the last 70 years.

Those aren't 'freedom fighters.' The only freedom they're after is the freedom to murder and abuse their fellow Afghans withouy interference, and they're quite annoyed when Americans or even their own countrymen try to put a stop to their atrocities.

Of course, you don't care what the Taliban does, do you? All you're worried about is what Americans might be doing. You have no problem with Taliban fanatics when they stop a bus to cut men's noses off for shaving, or whip women with aircraft cables for not walking quietly (lest the sounds of their footsteps seduce men), or beat a father to death because his fully dressed daughter was glimpsed through the window of his house while she washed it.

Not to mention banning kite flying, music, and even Buzkashi, the Afghan national sport. And outlawing paper bags, because the recycled paper in them might possibly have included pages from a Koran...

Yeah. Some 'freedom fighters.' What they really are is heavily armed thugs and religious fanatics, who will go back to preying on the weak and defenseless as soon as they finish fighting the Americans.

War and Peace was originally titled "War What Was it Good For."
    Jerry had it right.
