Chesapeake Light Craft in Annapolis, MD has a multi-year backlog of CAD drafting work. We're looking for a skilled, detailed-oriented person with a polished drafting portfolio and a love of small wooden boats who can work with our house designers. Scope of work includes helping to move new designs into production by creating CNC-ready files, and, even more, to help with old-fashioned documentation of new designs.

This is really mechanical drawing of the traditional kind, albeit in CAD. Most CAD portfolios we review consist of spidery, pixelated drawings lacking any sparkle or polish, or any appreciation that drafting is an artform combining the disciplines of engineering, illustration, and fine art. Most of what we see has a lot of the first, just a little of the second, and none of the third. (The best probably spent a lot of time with ducks and splines before taking up CAD.) Fancy Rhino renderings with deep shadows are lovely and just a click away for the punters, but careful detail and clean graphic illustration that limits tech calls is a lot more valuable (and much harder).

What we need are folks who can get from here:

While drawn entirely in CAD these days, quality plan sets retain the look---and the organic feel---of inked mechanical drawings from the 1950's.

In addition to that sort of documentation, we're looking for applicants with enough of a boatbuilding background to understand how to get from raw expanded panels like these:

to fleshed-out, fully-detailed and nested files like these, ready for the CNC machine:

We're open to all sorts of arrangements depending on the applicant. Part-time, temporary, or long-term. It could be distant telecommuting, or office hours here in Annapolis.

Qualified applicants start at $25/hour. Email portfolios to john@clcboats.com (no phone calls, please).

Welcome, CLCBoats. I envy the craftsmanship of that draftsman. Alas, I no longer have the eye for it.

It's a little late for me to apply, too. After starting off with pencils and a T-square in Junior High School nearly fifty years ago, I finally got around to downloading a serious CAD program this last week and started learning how to use it. I work away from home and I'm tired of being hours away from my drafting table, when I have an idea I want to put to paper....

But I admire the write-up for this position, and hope CLC manages to fill it with someone suitable.

    And there's the conundrum.....

CLC wants, needs, someone with highly specialized knowledge and experience. These days small wooden boat construction and drafting is really esoteric and very few people possess this experience. There is no point hiring someone without this specialized knowledge as you then spend all your time correcting mistakes. CLC wants to pay $25 per hour to this sub-contractor. CADprojects says he can do it, but his rate is $55 per hour (which is reasonable for a self-employed contractor).

How does one live in the US, pay taxes, buy healthcare, pay office rent, buy software and hardware: all on $25 per hour....or even $55 per hour when the billable are far less than 40 hours per week?

Why are folks surprised when all the drafting is being done in India and China?

And the clients are crying about high cost and long lead times........

    CAD design work available

    Dear John,

I noticed your add for a CAD draftsman with traditional boat building skills. I can help with this as I have 38 years experience as a boat builder and project manager and I specialize in re drawing old boat plans for owners and companies on AutoCAD. I have two websites: www.theclassicyacht.com and www.apcustomyachts.com. I have just redrawn a 38’ classic Alfred Mylne sailing boat from 1939. Please take a look at my websites and let me know if we are on the right track.

By the way I have a home and office next to The Ocean Marina in Thailand so my overheads are lower than Europe. I do not employ any Thai draftsmen and normally send a signed NDA to clients so there is no worry about copyright theft. I can supply design work on Bother AutoCAD and as PDF files.

    Yours Sincerely
    Andy J. J. Pitt MRINA

    No, no!

    No!

This level of drafting (I would say - technical illustration) requires knowledge of subject. You can hardly get it drawn by those who have not spent enough time around those boats.

Our Thai staff are good (none of them is 'draftsman', all have degree in engineering, design or naval architecture), by still funny things happen.

Hi, thanks for the interest and good words. I love this bulletin board but I am unable to visit as often as I'd like. So please email your resumes instead of posting them here! Nothing wrong with posting your resume if you like, of course, but I might not see it.
