There was a story in the newspapers a few years about a guy inside the city limits of some town around here, who had a pet rooster. And as anyone who's been around chickens knows, roosters don't really crow when the sun comes up. They start a couple of hours ahead of the dawn.

One of the neighbors complained, and the city told the guy his neighborhood wasn't zoned for farm animals and he'd have to get rid of the rooster. So he gave it to his uncle, who lived a few miles out of town. But first, he got some nice recordings of the bird.

He put them on a tape player with a timer, set it to go off every morning about 4:30, and the neighbor went berserk. So the inspectors came back with decibel meters, and shrugged. There was no law on the books about recorded roosters instead of live ones, and none of the recordings were loud enough to break any noise ordinances on the books.

Which reminds me of a semi-rural neighborhood in Lake Elsinore, where there have been wild peacocks for so long that no one really remembers where they came from originally; everyone seems to have a different story. A few years ago a doctor bought a house and moved in, and immediately started raising h*** about the peacocks, demanding that the city eradicate them.

I can understand the doctor not liking peacocks. They're noisy, and they leave droppings -- big ones, because they're big birds. But my question is this: why didn't he buy a house in a peacock-free zone, then -- instead of moving onto a street where they're a beloved tradition, and trying to bend the entire neighborhood to his will? Can you get more arrogant than that?

It's like people who buy a house next to a local air field that's been there for generations, then start trying to get it shut down because of the noise. If you don't want to live beside an airport, go buy a house somewhere else.

Troy, that is an unfortunate fact of life happening all over....where one man can cause sh*t for many others, much like the army.

We had a recent case here that made the press big time (again). Let me explain this first; if someone in SA is unhappy with an advertisement, or content of TV or radio, he/she may complain to the broadcasting commission to investigate.
We have this men deodorant TV advertisement running for many months where goddesses - later Photoshopped to become angels with wings - falling from the sky when a chap sprayed on this brand of deodorant. This ad was entertaining and loved by all except ONE narrow minded a*sehole.
This person complain to the broadcasting commission that this ad makes mockery of his/her religion and gave a description why:confused: The commission decided in this person's favour and the company was ordered to remove this ad from TV.
So much for the most modern democracy in the world....

Ps: SA is primary a Christian society with some other religions in small minorities - the fact was that no other Christian took insult to the ad except for one twisted mind...

[IMG] Here's the ad. - - (plus a second & third link just in case one of them gets banned ;))

Also on [IMG], AXE Heaven On Earth in Flemish and Dutch, which is most like Afrikaans . . . ? ?

    Cheers,
    Angel

P.S. - Wynand, see the comments on the Flemish version . . . .

Angelique, both are very similar but my vote will go for Flemish spoken in Belgium - actually a haven for SA artists to perform in Afrikaans ...

I checked the link on your PS and that is exactly my point - fortunately we only had one idiot complained and the ad banned, but still one to many.
As for the link and remarks; that is your typical religious fanatic that want his world and views imposed on others, even if they do not agree to his religion, beliefs etc. Unfortunately, these type of persons does not have an open mind, no regard to the result of their actions on others, religious or not:mad: For those who do not understand Flemish, I quote the Flemish posting and translated it to English for others to see why I and millions South Africans are so pissed off....

Yep, that's because the Flemish one is in standard language* and a bit 'tussentaal' and not in one of the very different dialects that are realy spoken in Flanders. - (* which is officially standard Dutch in Flanders)

Here's a mirror meant for the Dutch & Flemish (but also suitable for the rest of the western world if they could understand the language) in Afrikaans by an Dutch artist.

Hey Sorefeet, sorry for the distraction, please come up with something about the boat so we can go on with that . . . . . . :)

    Cheers,
    Angel

    I guess something like ‘‘ can't you look out for my laundry !! ’’ . . . . . :D

    Cheers,

Lurvio posted here this pic of a romanesque tower clock in Split . . . .

*I* don't like peafowl. Neighbour of mine used to have them. Being woken up by one of the cocks letting fly right outside your bedroom window at the crack of dawn is not a pleasant experience, especially the first time when you have no idea what was causing the noise. However I merely asked the owners to keep their birds home.

Many years ago I lived in a small village by the sea not far from Sydney. I had a nice small (by my current standards) workshop the size of a double garage. There was a vacant block to the south of me. A year or so later people built a 2 storey house on that block, with a balcony overlooking my back yard, so I no longer had any privacy.

The woman then proceeded to complain to me that my welding outside my workshop was too bright and hurting their eyes. As I knew damn well the light wasn't actually dangerous at that distance, I very politely informed her that I'd been there first, my workshop had been there before they built, I didn't ask them to build a 2 storey house overlooking my property, nor was I consulted, and I therefore saw no reason why I should cease my welding. If it really bothered her, I suggested that she use blinds or similar to block out the light.

There the matter rested. I never did get invited over for dinner or drinks, though.

The sheer arrogance of people never ceases to amaze me. On which note, it being a nice quiet Saturday, I think I'll go and do some more work on my boat. It's time to crank up the angle grinder.....

Thinking of steering from the rear cockpit.
Haven't bought any books by Peter Hunn either.
I believe it is a unique part of boating history here in the NW US.
When I'm finished with it (4th of July) it will be an 'eye catcher.'
    Sincerely,

Guess they wanted to create the atmosphere of an Italian city but were tight on budget... :D The woman is shouting in Italian but with a typical Dalmatian accent. The transcription in the comments below the video is correct: She says "Ma che succede? Devo lavare tutto di nuovo?" - translation: "What's going on? I have to wash it all again!"
Split is a very nice city with some wonderful buildings dating back to Roman Empire. But it has grown up a bit too much for my taste and has lost a lots of it's ancient spirit. So if you ever happen on a cruise along coast of Dalmatia (Croatia), I warmly suggest you to visit the magnificent old city of Zadar, some 80 nm north-west from Split: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/d.../7925920/Zadar-Croatia-The-perfect-break.html ;)
    Cheers!

Thanks for the link . Powerful song about a subject close to my hart and beautifully sung by Dutch Karin Bloemen

However, here is an older song sung in Afrikaans and because the song is about a train, it shows a bit of my beloved country now in tatters....

For the record, I think Italian is the best language to express any music and although I do not understand a word, I thoroughly enjoy listening to it all the time.

Sorefeet, any particular reason to have the boat completed by 4th of July? Presumably 2012 I belief. Your boat has a story to tell and I still look forward hearing it. Surely there must be someone on the forum that can enlighten us about its history.

    One would think so?

Not a believer in any such calendar, dooms-day scenario or ancient crystal ball gazer.

I chose the 4th of July, Independence Day due to the fireworks show over the lake in my city ; the Feather Craft Lapstrake Hawk has a due date of Memorial Day. I hope to have both of those and the finished Feather Craft Penguin in tow, the more the merrier & there will be a designated driver for all boats as I'm a friend of Bill W.
