This is gonna sound like a stupid question, but if an investor asks you
what would it take for his motor yacht to get permission to sail in the operating category II (by GL) (now it is classified for III), what would you tell him?

Btw, II by GL is 200 NM from shore, III is 20 NM. In short.

I know there are differences in construction (which hopefully he has more than enough to satisfy both, in terms of elements scantlings), in radio and navigational equipment (that can be handled). What else?

I always design yachts from the start; never had to deal with the case of "what would it take ..."?

    All advice would be appreciated.

Perhaps nothing.....perhaps the whole design and her construction is only suitable for river work.

Google the EU regulations. I dont have the link but its easy to find the site. It may even be posted on Boatdesign.net

    Hi michael, thanks for answering,
it is already a sea going M/Y, ... but yes, that was my answer too. Something along that lines, at least.
My answer was, in short, "I would need to calculate the construction and everything else according to category II" and "calculate according to category III", and then compare. There is no diff. list to just follow.

I just wanted to check with the folks in here whether it is my lack of experience and knowledge of regulation rules, or is it actually a question which cannot be answered that easily. As in "you need to change that, that and that ... and that, and you can upgrade your yacht to a higher category".
