Marc, oldsailor7, I owned the KC2 Typhoon in Canada, the wing mast was a beast without the sail up, you could not leave it unattended as would thrash from side to side, tethering it would flip the unattended boat, so had to take mast down, could be done by myself, pleasure to sail though. Where did OldSailor get the info? Just curious. I have some other photos somewhere, will post when find.

    Ian.
We worked together when I owned Canadian MultihullServices in Toronto Canada. I knew you had returned to Magnetic Island, but did not know if you were still there. We had some good times together which I remember with much pleasure, as we were succesfully breaking new ground with Locks new wing mast and your great sailing in Florida. Would love to see more pics. :D

    Kraken25 plans

Hi Oldsailor7. I too am interested in purchacing a set of Kraken 18 or 25 plans. How do I contact you? How does the Kraken 25 compare with Chris White's Discovery 20?

    Sorry KK.
I am not familiar with the Discovery 20. If you ask a few more questions to make a total of five posts on these forums we can converse by Private Messaging. It is more secure than discussing private details on the open web.
    Cheers, OS7.

I've just checked up on the Discovery 20 and it sounds like a good contender. It makes a good replacement for the Crowther Bunyip 20 which is no longer available. Price of plans seems a bit steep though for such a little boat.

different type of boat but I like them both

The Kraken 25 will be lighter weight than the discovery 20 and is much more spartan having no cockpit and a twin trapeze to aid righting moment it's more of a basic racing boat than the discovery 20. If you can leave the boat assembled for a season and only dissasemble and reassemble it occasionally I'd prefer the Kraken 25 but if you have to trailer it to the ramp each time and set it up I'd look more seriously at the discovery 20.

I suppose the advantage of the Kraken 25 is it makes a very narrow package when demounted but It takes longer to setup as you have to bolt the floats and main hull onto the crossbeams. In the Kraken 25 I'm building I'm going to integrate storage lockers for camping gear either side of the daggerboard case for when I'm not racing and just daysailing with the family, there is plenty of room.

    Kraken 25 on trailer

Does anyone have photos of a Kraken 18 or 25 on a trailer or unbolted one for trailering? Just curious on how long it takes to break one down or set up for sailing. :?:

The Kraken 18 would be faster because the crossbeams had a hinge to fold the floats back over the top to take the boat down to trailerable width. As far as how long it takes on the Kraken 25 I think there is 8 nuts in total to tighten on the boat that doesnt take very long but it takes some time.

I'm going to weld up a beach dolly out of aluminium to roll the main hull down to the beach which will hold the hull upright while the crossbeams and floats are fitted to make the process easier.

If you were frequently raising and lowering the mast I'd look at making some kind of easy lifting arrangement for the mast as it sits on a step on top of the front crossbeam. I've had a wing mast designed in carbon by Chris Tucker Marine Design to replace the aluminium rotating mast which is quite heavy and difficult to lift.

I just looked at the AYRS# 55 and I was looking at bunyip 20 which had fold up floats as an option but there was indeed a Kraken 18 Trimaran the design was adopted by the Trimaran Association of Australia's Victorian branch as the club boat. I think the beams were fixed though not folding on the Kraken 18 and the boat was basically a scaled down Kraken 25. The Kraken 18 was the predecessor to the bunyip 20.

Yes and it was quite likely the only one ever built.
I am quite certain that the above quote is correct.
To my knowledge the Kraken 18 was never a stock plan.

Theres not much info on the Kraken 18. I had a chat to Wayne Barrett the designer of the new mojo trimaran as he built one of the three or four Kraken 18's that were built in Australia. His Kraken 18 was built out of foam sandwich with an airex core so obviously Lock must have done a scantling for it. Initially they thought the boats were close in performance but Lock later mentioned to my father that the Kraken 25 was a significantly better performer in all conditions. I've also attached a photo of Jabberwock a kraken 25 that was built by Martin Cooper.
