I will continue to address fallacious attacks on me where they're made. Would you do differently?

Expressing personal differences on unrelated threads just makes the originator of the rant look foolish, and does not achieve the ranter's objective in terms of changing opinion. If anything it just annoys the hell out of contributors who were not part of the original dispute.

Some of you clearly have differences of opinion from another thread that are absolutely nothing to do with this topic in any way, shape or form. Go take your arguments elsewhere, please, as this thread has been debating the concept of a wind/electric hybrid.

No, you are wrong again, I'm afraid. A conventional sailing boat can certainly travel faster than the wind speed, but NOT downwind, only with the relative wind off to one side (the point of sail known as a reach). The reason is to do with the lift/drag ratio of the boats sails. These produce more lift than drag, like an aircraft wing, and so can create a propulsive force that enables the boat to sail faster than the wind, but only when the sail is working in this way, with the relative wind off to one side. Downwind a conventional sailing boat can only ever travel slower than the wind speed. Hydroptere is fast because it is fitted with hydrofoils to lift the hulls out of the water and reduce hydrodynamic drag, but otherwise it has a fairly conventional set of sails for a high performance boat.

The key to making a propeller driven wind powered boat sail downwind faster than the wind is to understand that that the propulsive force comes from the air propeller, which is driven by a water turbine. Motion starts because the total aerodynamic drag is greater than the total hydrodynamic drag and mechanical system drag, causing the wind to act to make the boat start to move downwind. Once moving, the propulsive force from the air propeller adds to the force from wind drag until the point is reached where the speed equals the wind speed. Above this speed the craft relies wholly on the propulsive force from the air propeller and both aerodynamic and hydrodynamic drag act to hinder progress, rather than help.

That's one person's opinion. Others seem to accept Boston's lies posted on this thread. If you can figure out how to have people take their lies and rants to another thread, that's where we'll respond to them.

Please take this argument elsewhere as going DDWFTTW has nothing to do with the topic of this thread.

But as long as we're here - I imagine you understand that the principle of a sailboat making downwind VMG greater than wind speed is demonstrating exactly the same principles (and using exactly the same aerodynamics and hydrodynamics) as a sailboat that is configured as you suggest to go DDWFTTW.

Pissing off people who have no argument with you seems a pointless act, in my view, but I guess it takes all sorts.

I have no argument with you at all, but personally I find the use of terms like "lies" offensive on an unrelated thread. Thank goodness this forum has an "ignore" function. You have the dubious honour of being the first person here I've ever felt the need to put on it, so I don't need to see all your anger and hatred when responding to this thread in future.

I have explained repeatedly that I will respond to false accusations where they are made. If you quit telling me not to respond, there is nothing left to say. And I will agree that "pissing off people that have no argument with you" is a pointless act. So why do you insist on continuing this. Drop it and it will be dropped.

I agree. And that is precisely why I insist on responding to Boston's accusations. Perhaps you haven't noticed that he accuses us of lying several times - in this very thread - before I even showed up.

Thank goodness indeed. I presume that means I won't have to see yet another of your ridiculous pleas for me to stop defending myself against attacks that have been made IN THIS THREAD. But I have to wonder whether you would have anger and hatred toward someone like Boston if he attacked you with lies way back in the original thread, and again here now.

Frankly I think it's interesting that you don't feel the need to put BOSTON on ignore because of his persistent accusations of lying IN THIS THREAD. It's interesting that you haven't commented on his obvious anger and hatred. But I don't get the idea that you're all that good at following the plot. I also don't quite believe that you've put me on ignore - but I certainly hope you have.

It's now relevant since Windboat the OP has expressed interest in it. Therefore his thread is not hijacked. The boat that Jeremy has envisioned is purely theoretical since ddwfttw has not been achieved on water. Maybe Spork should direct his energies to creating one. Now that is something that REALLY hasn't been done before!

There is talk. But one thing at a time. For the moment we're working on a wind powered vehicle that goes directly up wind faster than the wind.

Frankly I'm not interested in what this rather unpleasant spork character has to say, so quoting his stuff in another post just so I get to see it is a bit irritating.

Anyway, windboat doesn't seem to be talking directly about going downwind faster than the wind, but was referring to Hydroptere in his post, a boat which can sail quite a bit faster than the wind, but like other conventional sailing boats, only on a reach.

What seems clearer to me now is that windboat seems to be going through a learning process about the way his proposed idea might work, what the constraints are and perhaps he may begin to focus on the important design problems that need to be addressed before a successful a wind/electric hybrid can be built.

But you're apparently plenty happy with those here that have called me a liar repeatedly. Your logic doesn't seem to be quite in order.

But then if you were being honest, you'd have to admit that you get to see it either way since I proved that you don't have me on ignore.

What is becoming clear is that you are every bit as offensive at Boston since you insist on saying "please just go away and allow us to continue telling lies about you - that's the sort of thing that IS tolerated in this thread - but you defending yourself in this thread, well, that's right out".

Drop it is spork. You defended your case, Its clear you credited Bauer etc. Now you are really started to look like troll.

Jeremy's comment for taking quarreling elsewhere (or lies comment I believe) was not aimed at solely you. But you, me, boston etc. and fairly so. Enough bandwidth has been distracted from the original topic.

Lets just stop this. Any reasonable person who will get your point has done so already. And please don't do the Jeremy this and that. He is a calm frequenter who provides tons of good advice and knowledge.

Sorry you feel that way. I only post in response to others. If I'm attacked, I will defend myself. That's not a troll. You would do the same.

If someone attacks me on this forum, I will defend myself on this forum. If people do not attack me, I will not defend myself.

Than why must you start this up again? If you want to drop it - drop it.

So you posted to say "let's not post"?

I don't know how to parse that sentence. I don't know what you mean - but I guess I don't really want to. We both think it should be dropped.

I only know him as the guy that tells me I shouldn't defend myself against vicious and completely false attacks. He has not earned any credit with me.

    This is your calm poster:

"...I don't need to see all your anger and hatred when responding to this thread in future."

That is an extremely biased and misleading characterization. Where the hell was he when Boston was going off with his continuous vicious lies 3 pages before I arrived!?

You really want this dropped? Really? Then drop it. Don't respond to me and tell me not to respond to you or anyone else.

If someone attacks me on this forum - I will respond.

Only to a point. And we are certainly past that.
