I'm wondering if you could make a foldable tri with a covered center cabin ( like Serena below) and have comfortable, foldable or stowable(in some way) small side cockpits? May drastically increase inside room w/o too much extra weight, if it could be worked out? I'm thinking of a small, sort of motorsailer, tri like this....

There's the modified Voyager again!. Many of the larger Cross designs had the covered cabin/ side cockpit. Really just a matter of choosing the size and folding mechanism, the wider it can be folded the easier to arrange. Road width doesn't leave room for side cockpits. Here is a picture Gypsy 28 sent me of Renegade, a modified Nicol Vagabond Mk2.

 

I suppose the reason for it being on the larger designs and not the smaller ones would be because the weight of the people don't matter so much anymore on the larger designs. Sardine run doesn't have a cockpit, because at that size it doesn't really need one. Leaf Baley designed a 27' racing trimaran that didn't have a cockpit, and it looked really good. maybe seats on the center hull, like on the hobie sc21 on the center hull would work instead of a cockpit. High and dry ride. and more interior space and minimum weight change.
