Germany's hard water experiments sank to the bottom of a lake, effectively halting their pursuit of this type of weapon. Had they been able to continue, they would have taken at least as long as we did, probably longer because they didn't have the industrial resources we did. This means they would have been at least two years, probably 3 away from assembling enough fissionable mass for an effective device. The same would be true of Japan, though like longer still, as their resources situation was much worse off then Germany's. I suspect it wasn't for an atomic weapon, but for fuel, as this was their primary area of research in the later half of the war. Most of their "wonder weapon" development had screeched to a halt by '44 and protecting synthetic fuel plants and distribution and storage sites became their primary concern. In fact, it was the disruption of this element of their infrastructure, that forced every area of the Germany military to only consider short, very limited "exposure" to the allies. They literally didn't have the fuel or oil to mount much more then this.

Little boy --the first bomb --- 13.000 tone TNT was Uranium.

Fat man was plutunium and was larger it also missed the target by some degree.

Deaths by both bombs are widely disputed and basically unknown,-- in between 100,000 and 20,000 were vaporised. Little boys target was a T bridge not far from a school and was released from Inola gay at 8 15 am. It was triggered at 1800 feet to maximise damage buy joining 2 shock waves meeting together at the ground.

America is the only country to have used nuclear weapons.

My question is why the town centre and innocent women and children who were possibly oblivious to there even being a war at all. why not the government building or the emperors palace as they were the ones waging war?

A young girl hurt at the time spent the next 14 years regularly standing naked in front of doctors until she declined at the age of 16. She said she hoped the information they had got from her would help the world against weapons such as this.

The damage to people from nuclear weapons is carefully documented in Hiroshima and is available to any country in the world, even America.

    Greetings,

Liberty is the gift of God through his son The Christ Jesus, therefore freedom is free. There was fore knowledge of the coming attack on Pearl Harbor and allowed to maximize the affect to bring America into the war, just like the sinking of the armament carrying ship Luisithania in the previous war and, the controlled demolition of the three towers on 9/11 to try to justify the current wars.

Followers of the Prince of Peace should be most aware of these deceptions and bring to light the evil done in darkness.

    Peace.

Both cities were legitimate military targets; they weren't chosen simply to inflict random damage and casualties. I'll quote Wikipedia and save myself some typing:

During the Meiji period, Nagasaki became a center of heavy industry. Its main industry was ship-building, with the dockyards under control of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries becoming one of the prime contractors for the Imperial Japanese Navy, and with Nagasaki harbor used as an anchorage under the control of nearby Sasebo Naval District. These connections with the military made Nagasaki a major target for bombing by the Allies in World War II.

During World War II, the Second Army and Chugoku Regional Army were headquartered in Hiroshima, and the Army Marine Headquarters was located at Ujina port. The city also had large depots of military supplies, and was a key center for shipping.

Sixty five years later, it's easy to second-guess the decision to use nuclear weapons. But at the time, I doubt British troops were any more enthusiastic about the prospect of invading Japan than the American troops were...

Interesting the way you blend religious mumbo-jumbo with paranoid, anti-government conspiracy theories. And of course, I mean that in the kindest, most positive way possible...;)

No one deliberately allowed Pearl Harbor; no one deliberately allowed the Lusitania to be sunk; and the destruction of the World Trade Center was not a case of "controlled demolition."

There's words in the Scriptures that say "willfully ignorant", they signify not wanting to know truth because then you have to come around to a different way of thinking and reject preconcieved notions. Its amazing the lies, destruction, and bondage people accept rather than the easy yoke Jesus promised.

Theres a group of about a thousand architects and engineers who deal with building structure design on a daily basis and have put thier names and careers on the line, to bring out truth about what really happened at the 9/11site, you can accept or reject thier conclusion. With access to the internet this information is readily available and its a great thing, people are less likely to just sit at the idiot box and be programmed in what to think, the papers and publishers are also in trouble, we don't need thier lies either.

We are all paying for the consequences of allowing these lies to propagate but, the Truth will ultimately prevail, make the choice to be on the righteous side now.

There is no dispute or confusion, the bomb Little boy was aimed at the city centre and was considered to be on target.

Again why not the government building housing the people who were waging the war.

Its the same with Libya, bomb Gadaffi and it will be all over --literally tomorrow, but the Un seems to be bombing everything but, under some misguided lawers ruling that it would be illegal.

And what exactly is your point?

Sixty to eighty million died in the most senseless debauch imaginable- the war of aggression we know of as World War Two.
Most of those who died were non combatants, innocents; men women and children.
The machinations of the Japanese slaughtered over 20 million in China alone. Again mostly the innocent were the ones to die.

    Ethics in war give pause.

Hitler wanted England as an ally to help in his destruction of Russia.
Failing that he set out to bomb the county to its knees, invade, intern all of age men to slave camps and subject the remaining population to arbitrary arrest and torture to keep them subdued.

All the while he bitterly complained if we attacked the float planes used to pick up the flyers in the channel so they could replane and continue the terror bombing of London.

    Start here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_bombing#Development_of_the_term_terror_bombing

The axis bombed to destroy their neighbors, the allies bombed to stop them.
    Innocents died by the millions.
    Didn't you know this?

Of course the bomb was aimed at the center of Hiroshima. It was probably the most militarized city in Japan, with military facilities scattered throughout it--along with civilian infrastructure and heavy industry almost completely devoted to supporting that military presence.

Take a couple of minutes to look at the following link, complete with a map of military facilities at the time of the bombing. It's from a Japanese website called 'The Spirit of Hiroshima,' which is hardly an apologist for the United States....

    http://www.hiroshima-spirit.jp/en/museum/morgue_e11.html

Some of you moonstruck folks need to get over this silly notion that the US deliberately bypassed military targets, and instead chose to slaughter a bunch of innocent Japanese villagers and peasants--while they were out frolicking hand in hand through the cherry blossoms and singing Kumbaya in Japanese...

As far as Libya goes, Gadaffi is shelling his own cities day in and day out--causing a steady stream of civilian casualties. Meanwhile, people like you piss and moan that NATO might have accidentally killed someone who didn't have a gun in his hand at the moment a bomb nailed him.

Compare the number of innocent civilian casualties from Gaddafi's indiscriminate shelling to those caused by NATO's bombing. Then explain to us why you're badmouthing NATO, instead of Gaddafi.

bntii, thank you for your post--especially the death toll in China; I was getting ready to go look up those numbers. Compared to the casualties inflicted by the Japanese in China alone, the civilian casualties at Hiroshima and Nagasaki were a drop in the bucket.

First of all, the main thing the internet has done so far (aside from being a good source for cooking recipes) is to provide moral support and backup for crackpots. No matter how backwards your head is screwed on, you can sit at your computer and find people just as nuts as you are. It no longer matters that your family, friends, neighbors and coworkers know you're a crackpot, because online you can become one with a whole crowd of other idiots who believe exactly the way you do.

The fundamental flaw in your argument is that our leaders didn't need 9/11 for anything. Whipping up the populace for a war is so ridiculously easy that there would have been no point in bothering to stage attacks on the Trade Center and the Pentagon.

It's somewhat amazing (and quite amusing) that you're babbling about Jesus the Prince of Peace, while at the same time parroting the views of Muslim fanatics who believe everything the United States does is part of a conspiracy against Islam.

Whose side are you on, son?

There were six potential targets for the bombs and all were intentional spared the fire bombing campaign that had pretty much brought Japan's infrastructure to a crawl.

Two primary and 2 secondaries each. Hiroshima was the only primary target hit, Nagasaki was the first secondary, because of cloud cover and was nearly bypassed, but a window was seen after 20 minutes of circling.

There's no question of the military value of these targets and strategic bombing had been the common place, though controversial at that time too, method of bringing down an aggressor's ability to make war. Technology has permitted us considerable latitude in this regard since. Talking about how terrible something was with modern mind sets, on a nearly 3/4's of a century old conflict seem futile at best.

Troy, 'ol Goodwill there is a forum antagonist and has been repeatedly so. He probably thinks the world should have ended last month and is pretty pissed he sold his house and cashed in the 401K prematurely. This is the type of person that filled his swimming pool with tap water, the day before Y2K was going to hit, so he'd be the only person on his block with drinking water. He never can support any of his beliefs with fact and it's obvious to anyone that's read, just a few of his posts, that's he's a nut job of the highest order. Sometimes medication and therapy just aren't enough and we really should consider electro shock again for this types.

they wanted to make a damage assessment of what an atomic bomb would do to a city

which is the main reason they had been spared prior bombing and i believe severe penalties were in place for anyone bombing them

I don't know of penalties, particularly in light of the very few who knew anything at all about the project, but damage assessment is a standard in any target bombing, including today. It also should be without saying, that the development of a new weapon system, especially one with a yield so much greater then previously and one they weren't all too sure about, needed a clear and sterile target for good data.
