I have a 1998 Tige inboard with a velvet drive 10-17 trans. I rebuilt it using a kit I got from Skidim with new seals clutches, etc. When I first put it in the water to test, I had forward and reverse. I took it for a spin and it was slipping bad in forward when I gave it throttle. Reverse quit working altogther. I am not sure what I have done wrong or where to start checking for possible problems. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Did you set the clutches to the specifications in the manual? What is the pump pressure?

I am not sure what you mean by setting the clutches. They would only go in one way. I have not checked the pressures yet. I will do that in the morning and let you know what I find out.

Where do you check the pressure? I assume it would be at the two plugs on top of the trans?

    Thanks for the reply.

They are both connected together. It doesn't matter which one you use. There will only be pressure in forward. The clutches have to be set with shims to the proper thickness.

Sounds like I may have screwed up the setting of the clutches. I used all of the ones that came with the kit. I thought that there where the same number in the kit that were in the transmission to start with. Sounds like I may need to pull it and tear it back down.

I will check the pressure first before I pull it back out.

It sounds like the pressure is low if it is slipping in fwd and reverse.

Reverse seemed pretty strong when I backed it off the trailer. After about a twenty minute test ride, the trans was slipping bad in forward and would not go over about 10 mph. I took it back to the trailer and did not have any reverse at all.

i take you have checked the oil level, you may be losing oil through the cooler or it may need a top up after its first run.

I just checked the pump pressure at the 3/8" plug near the shift lever. I get about 135 psi in all three gear selector positions. It will only turn in the forward position though.

I also failed to mention this earlier but when we ere on our test run, the tranny seemed to get hot very quickly.

is the front pump cover aligned for the suitable rotation, i don't know what happens if it is not but gonzo might know.

I think I have the pump in correctly or I do not think I would be getting any pressure at all.

Attached are the installation manual and the service manual. I rebuilt my velvet drive with parts from Ebasic power. Good luck

selector valve misalignment will cause low clutch apply pressure.
It is overheating likely because it is slipping.

This is a very basic trans. I rebuilt one of mine.
the oil pressure sounds sufficient to properly engage the clutch packs, so must be either the oil flow to clutches or the clutch piston seals. I wonder if you put this together properly, have you worked with auto transmissions before this?

This is the first time I have ever tried to rebuild a transmission. I will pull the selector valve and check it first
