Actually, Chapelle's book on Naval Warcraft shows a lateen rigged gunboat not much larger than 30'. If I remember correctly, about 5 were built and sent to the Med during our first war with the Barbary pirates. Of course, the frigate "Philadelphia" made more headlines than the little gunboats. But they had the same bow cannon arrangement. The lateen 'might' be a bit easier to sail shorthanded and a touch better to windward.

If I were to look for his book, which might I look for? His "Boatbuilding" one seems pretty handy, but, which book in particular of his do you reference?

I believe it was "The History of the American Sailing Navy: The Ships and Their Development". It could also have been "The History of American Sailing Ships" but I am pretty sure that it was the Navy one.
