What is all this wet stuff about being polite with someone who makes an asinine statement that you disagree with?? Some honesty often hits between the eyes ... and that is healthy. Get over it. This is not some PC, mutual handshaking assemblage. People can disagree and can reply without some smug, self appointed master of ceremonies dictating what is acceptable or not acceptable.
I think bigbowen hit a few sensitive nerve spots.

    hey cthippo,
Thankyou for reading the post as I read it, I too discovered after my original post the intended 'target' for his ire,

I too am against tricksters who pass themselves off as proffessionals, however I am not clear if eka feels people who choose to work the marine trade 'proffesionaly' and honestly in the manner of a career change, are included in his frustration, what would your opinion be?

    BB,

    You're not learning!

Respect denotes both a positive feeling of esteem for a person of other entity (such as a nation or a religion), and also specific actions and conduct representative of that esteem. Respect can be a specific feeling of regard for the actual qualities of the one respected (e.g., "I have great respect for her judgment"). It can also be conduct in accord with a specific ethic of respect. Rude conduct is usually considered to indicate a lack of respect, disrespect, where as actions that honour somebody or something indicate respect.

Specific ethics of respect are of fundamental importance to various cultures. Respect for tradition and legitimate authority is identified by Jonathan Haidt as one of five fundamental moral values shared to a greater or lesser degree by different societies and individuals.

Respect should not be confused with tolerance, since tolerance doesn't necessarily imply any positive feeling and is compatible with contempt, which is the opposite of respect.

I am one of the amateurs here . The only disrespect I see , is yours for the unanointed ones of which you speak. You have insulted me with this provocation . Surely you have better thing too do with you time, and if you feel disrespected by the guy down the street building his own boat , then that is just to bad for you.

Many people are qualified who are not formally qualified(i.e., parchment on wall) by self-education and experience. How does one who is self-taught award himself a NA degree? He doesn't, because he is unaware of much of the coursework required for the formal degree. The difference is in the level of qualification.

Im not learning? yes respect can mean 'I respect his opinion' or it can apply to the respect you pay to another person,
I see it like this, I meet a person, I automatically treat them with a certain level of respect, if I admire this person this level may rise, this is exactly the case when I started reading eka's thread, however when he got to the bit about disrespect to naval architects, this level of respect shot through the floor,
In the same way take Tony Blair or Geaorge Bush jr, I have so much respect for their warmongering vermin, that I wouldnt fetch a hose if they were on fire, so you see respect is earned, its not guaranteed,

    BB,

Type up your posts elsewhere on your PC, so that you can run a spell check. I can have but little respect for your thoughts, unless you learn how to put them together in a cogent and meaningful presentation. It's not hard.

Respect is earned; well, you can earn mine, by achieving better standards. Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. Ability is honed by doing. Now build that boat. :)

    bntii,
Does your point infer that he either has no words, i.e. they are beneath contempt, or has no words, i.e. they are not the point of his irritation, ?
the original point was quite clear in my mind, and evidently a few others also, that naval architects deserve praise and worship etc, he later clarified his point, which takes it in a new direction completely,
Imho, the question of design was raised in the context that can amateurs design good boats? that is where the respect dissapears and as such I feel that he should stand up and take responsibility for his post, and accept that others feel that is highly inflamatory,

Gentlemen (thats meant to enourage us all to be gentlemen)

Hasn't there been enough on this?

People either learn from experience or they don't - and I just mean this backbiting arguement - not the subject of amatuers vs pros in designing.

I for one am finished with this discussion.

PM me if you really need to express something else.

Well, I've learned enough to put a new tiled roof on my house, but I'm no roofer. I read books, asked for advice, watched the professionals and climbed the scaffold and did the job in front of me. Would I tackle a cathedral roof? Only if Hades freezes.

It's horses for courses. Reuel Parker is qualified as a self taught builder of boats and has many successes to his name. Read his C.V. and it is apparent he holds strong opinions about the subject of this thread. He started learning about boats at an early age. He also studied physics, engineering, music, oceanography and emergency medicine in his younger days, so it's fair to say he knew what he wanted to be.

    BB,

Your spelling is still atrocious. Use words you can spell. You also have a nonsensical delusion of self importance as demonstrated by your demand that "he should stand up and take responsibility for his post, and accept that others feel that is highly inflamatory." Are you deranged?

On that point let me sum it up my experience this way. I'm have been basically a self taught builder for some 30 to 35yrs but joined this forum and hired a designer to help me with what possibly will be my last build. My observation thus far into my build is not that I was doing anything wrong or dangerious previous,I was just never attaining the full performance potential of the machine. The why of course is I didn't have the training to engineer toward that very important aspect of any build. While my past builds were very seaworthy, as good or better than anything out there, their sailing performance even as motorsailers were about 75% of what it should have been. Technical info from my designer and this forum have shown me where i could have improved this. My conclusion is,while the many can do self design it takes the few to perfect it.--- Geo.

I couldn't check the forum for some days and I am quite upset about being like a person who starts a treat and get lost after it. I red most of the posts and I would like to share my opinion.
Languages can be tricky sometimes and I might have difficulties to express myself since English is not my native language.
I would like to let everybody know that I have nothing to do with people who have a desire to design their own boat or build their own boat. The problem that I tried to point out was some people out there who claim themselves as designers without any knowledge. I can put people, who turn this design hobby into a professional business, in the same group. What's the reason that make me think so? or some might say "who gives you the right to decide who can do what or who can't". Nobody makes decision for other people but if I see someone saying that he/she designs yacht for business purposes or criticize works of naval architect's without any knowledge, well that's my territory. Long story short, desire to do something for himself and business are two different things.
