    Mastmonkey:

Wouldn't be possible to scale one of these up from plans via lofting?

Tom Colvin got the junk/yacht compromise as close to right as anyone. His own KUNG-FU-TSE was about 46 feet and very traditionally derived, but built in aluminum. All his designs can be built in wood or metal, and he drew and built junks to 56 feet I believe. His plans are available, well detailed, and are the product of many years of seagoing experience.

I just sent Mr. Colvin an email to inquire more about his designs and how to buy plans.

    Hi Battan,

you are showing a picture from Allen Petersen's "Hummel Hummel", do you have more pictures from that book that show the ship from the side?

I am planning to build a sailing sampan (around 18' long), I have seen people building one based on the Blake design, however they originally do not have a centerboard.

A smaller version of the "Hao Man Er" Allen transliterated Hummel Hummel to Chinese :) might be closer to a Chinese fishing boat that is designed for sailing.

    Any comments would be appreciated.

    Greetings

    Chris aka FanChuan

Here's what I could find of HUMMEL HUMMEL. Low resolution but shows the above water shape and proportions well. The book is available through the used book dealers on-line ABE Books (Advance Book Exchange). If I remember right, there are 5 or 6 photos of HH in the book, but I don't have a copy.
Here's a nice little sampan too.

    Hi Bataan,

thanks for your quick reply. I might get the book (it is actually $25 at Amazon).

I will also contact Yuen_sail, it looks like that he is the local expert :)

Before I build a full size version I will first build a scale version. I just finished a quick test model according to these lines:http://www.thecheappages.com/junk/sampan.html

    Greetings Chris

PS: is that you in the "pirate" picture :)

Yes, I'm a retired 18th century pirate. That was when I spent 8 months working on Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3 in the Bahamas. Strange job.For Junk stuff check out these three parts of LEARNING FROM ALLEN, a student film about Allen Farrell and his junk CHINA CLOUD.

There's a good bit of junk-rigged BERTIE sailing in there as well.
    Cheers

18 feet is kind of small.

If the book is $25 at Amazon get it. There's a great deal of practical junk lore in it you will find no where else.
