    Some questions:
    Type and size of boat?
    Your experience with boat design?
Your knowledge of basic naval architecture / boat design such as prismatci coefficient, metacenter, etc?

I want to build an aluminum yacht that is 20 feet long.

Well, this would be my first real boat, but I have been building small boats since I was 7, my largest being the size of a coffee table at age 13, and it was RC as well.

I Googled it, but I found nothing except a sourceforge page, and the download was only a PDF file.

But boat design skill and boat building skill are different. If you do not have any experience regarding boat design, I will suggest you to go through books first, then softwares softwares(when you gather enough theoretical knowledge).

But I designed the boat and then built it.

But I did not uderstand what did you mean by "real boat". If you were concerned about the hydrostatics,stability(safety...), Drag... etc for the boat which was not "real" then its okay,,, you can continue for "real" boats...

I meant "real boat" meaning one that at least 1 person could fit in, not a model.

Also on the sourceforge page you should see a smaller link [View All Files] and clicking that you will see all versions listed -click 2.6 and you'll see http://sourceforge.net/projects/freeship/files/FREE!ship/Version%202.6/

(also at the top of this forum are two threads containing a number of software packages linked)

I believe the intent was simply to get more information; the better other people know what the actual task is, the better they can recommend the best tools for the job at hand.

To accompany the free software, I'd suggest the following 2 books from a book store:
    * Principles of Yacht Design (Hardback), Lars Larsson, Rolf E. Eliasson. ISBN 13: 9780713678550 ISBN 10: 0713678550
    * The Elements of Boat Strength: For Builders, Designers and Owners (Hardback), David Gerr. ISBN 13: 9780070231597 ISBN 10: 0070231591

After all, I suppose you'd want your boat to turn out structurally sound and safe?

What everyone is attempting to say, as politely as possible, well except Edwardn who made an interesting introduction to his attitude, is that software will faithfully draw as inappropriate a set of shapes as you ask of it. In other words, though it may look pretty cool on the screen, it may be all wrong for your SOR. Simply put, the software packages most novice designers employ (FreeShip, etc.) will not tell you if it's a good design or approach to the SOR or a bad one. The software assumes you have an understanding of the concepts and principles involved.
