I seem to remember taking some of these things apart as a kid and the two tubes always went passed each other. Keeps it water tight, or relatively so.

It just needs enough space around the pipe ends, the higher the dorade box the better. Also consider heeling of the boat when it's (the dorade vent, not the boat) half full of water.

I will ad something, since I put a screen on tube going through the deck, the air flow is reduced by 50% since the screen is a 50% mesh.
It is a trade off I accept due to the numerous small and big mosquitoes we have in Maine.

This is some picture of the boat with the first coat of coal tar.
more will be done today.
The next step will be to prepare and put the steel bar 1 1/2" by 1/8" all along the chine log to protect it against chafe, it is the reason why the side are coated first.
Then the underneath will be next.

Place the screen vertical between the inlet and outlet hose to prevent flow reduction! Using the entire heighth and width of the box. 4 small battens and a velcro do the trick. Make the box ground surface ten times the inlet diameter at least. Make the drainage 10% - 15% of the pipe diam. only. That way you build up enough pressure for airflow without holding too much water when it rains.
Make the inside accessible for clean out. (screwed on top, non sealed)

It should be possible to apply the tar on the bottom, regardless of the sun!
