What is the best marine plywood

Marine grade Lauan was once available but I have not seen it in years. Lauan is somewhat more durable than Occoume and other characteristics are similar or better than Occoume. There was a stir of something called Kerrung a couple years ago. The weight alone was enough to keep me away as it was at least 40% heavier than Occoume. Types and sources of marine plywood has always been a moving target. I know of no source for definitive information on all types of plywood.

For shear strength you could (very roughly) take half of the value found for the same material in solid form, parallel to the grain.

 

For Ocoume, from a French manufacturer:

As you can see the weight difference is not small. +28% (if my math is right)

I am not sure there is even a "rule" like, well in ply it is 25% heavier, but

price is equal and less labor. Like I have said, many variables.

How well a guy will use the materials for maximum strength to weight issues.

 

Although using multiple materials does have advantages, it also requires a lot more craftsmanship. don't want to discourage you, but it's something to keep in mind....

LL Johnson / Johnson's Workbench

I noticed that LL Johnson was listed a a source for marine ply. Just a note to advise of my experience with these guys. Most of the specialty lumber operations are very professional so the failure of these guys was a surprise.

In short, I purchased about 30 sheets of Sapele and 2 sheets of teak for finish work on my boat. The 1/4 Sapele was fine but the 1/8 was trash. The 23 sheets of 1/8th consisted of seconds with wild color variations and up to 13 lines of knots running across the ribbon sapele. Four sheets were actually 3/32 with paper thin veneer and significant edge and corner damage.

The teak sheets were truly bizarre. From normal teak color to black and appeared to be turned off tiny stock. Throw away quality.

The sad part of this is that they trashed a five year project with the garbage they shipped to me. And since it shipped to the USVI I have no recourse but to try to make it work. I paid $500 in shipping to have them clean out their trash.

Sorry-- My experience is that these are untrustworthy and generally bad people.
