Volvo conversion

I have a chance to get a 1977 Bayliner 19". The original Volvo 140(?) 4 cyl. engine is missing out of it. I'm wondering what the possibility of replacing it w/ a later model motor & outdrive unit is? Does anyone here have any experience w/ this or know of any other web sites that would have some info on this project? Any thoughts on this are appreciated!

Your transom cut-out is bigger than today's standard. Therefore, you will have to either re-fibreglas the transom and start fresh or buy an adapter plate from a Volvo dealer that will allow the new, smaller transom plate to fit over the old hole. The 130hp 3.0GL in-line 4 cyl or, if you have room, the 4.3GL V6 190hp would be good replacements. Specs and drawings at:

Question though. Is a 1977 Bayliner worth several thousand on a repower? One would think you could buy a boat that works for less.

I'm also wondering if it would be worth it. You could probably buy a better boat in good condition for less that you would spend on the repower job with this one.

 

The owner should pay you to take it off of his property. BUT only if it is in complete condition and everything looks clean and new. No mold -standing water- wet foam seat cushions, etc. You will never sell the boat, and get any money out, that you put into it.

 

So, what I'm reading here is: If the boat is in great condition and the present owner, in a quest to tidy-up his property, pays enough to re-power it, then Robbster can proceed with his dream? You guys remind me of my wife, who innocently gets me to divulge my best ideas and then uses them for skeet. "Pull!" And, like her, y'all appear to be right. Keep up the good work.
