frame-less is an option i may consider later on, maybe in a second project, but for now i'm sticking to a framed yacht. hull design for me at the moment is proving very difficult, i think its something i will gather over time. i am how ever going to design the interior fit out, electrical and propulsion fit out as well. and possibly even the rig

how about a traditional 40' sloop eg, top sail, stay sail, gaff rigged main with topsail etc saw some pretty pictures

(not to mention that i am a tad of traditionalist when it comes to design and architecture)

In regards to the design software, since you are a student I think you can get Rhino for less than $200, not a bad price and you can continue using it after your graduate.
