Does anyone own one of these? Pictures sailing or of accommodation?

I have been meaning to ask the same question my self.
I recently bought a KH 26 thats a bit of mongrel!
The vaka dates from 1987(?) and although looks like his later designs, has a hard chined bottom. The amas are from the KH 24, built recently.
22 foot of beam and a 35'6" rotating mast.
Its a very wet boat which I believe is due to the chine and the fact she sits low in the water.
Mr Hugues designs a short daggerboard trunk so as not to compromise the interior. I fitted a collapsible skirt around top edge extending up 22" from the WL
A colomn of water is pushed up the trunk/skirt and at 13 knots the water is flowing over the top insuring the interior is as wet as the ex!
I guess I need to extend it.
I would be interested to discus these boats.
    Guy
PS She was called Nickel Sea if anyone knows her

Do you have any pics of your boat?
On mine, there is a piece of rubber covered with a shaped stainless steel plate that is screwed onto the hull. The dagger board leading edge pushes the rubber aside a bit and forms a loose seal. The previous owner warned me that water would come out of the dagger board case if the seal was poor.
    Cheers

I will get some pics posted in the next couple of days.
I've been mulling over the idea of building a CM hull to replace the chined hull.
Cut around under the cabin pod, cockpit and deck and remove as one piece.
Have Mr Hugues design a CM hull with the right waterlines etc, then scribe the pod, cockpit, deck on to it. Swap over the foils and presto! A modern vaka with rounded sections, bouyant ends and a lot less rocker and all in a weekends work
    What do you think?

Why don't these tris have full cb trunks extending up to the deck?

It's just a boat you can put the daggerboard anywhere you want. That said, Kurt believes in the design, and says the boat will not get wet if you build it right. mine doesn't flood, but it did get wet once at anchor in choppy seas. I just have a lid for the slot now, when I anchor it in bad weather. I know one guy who has the 30 footer, and he offset the boards and made the trunk go through to the roof.

The advantage, is great board location, but the board isn't in the way sticking up in the middle of the cabin.

Here is my 24 footer, very bad sails, but moves along, cost me about 2500 in US dollars about 15 years back:

Speaking of which, does anyone know of something that one can put on the bolt rope to reduce binding, and get at say walmart, yet won't rot the sails...

Kurt says your boat will be cheap, relatively fast to build, and go very fast and sail well. All true, just don't expect a winibago.

Great looking boat there! Do you have a better pic of the motor mounting. That part gave me fits. The current arrangement back there is much more complicated, but nicer, and the rear of the cockpit is much more solid. I was not willing to believe I could mount a motor as you have. So another pic or two would help me.

Nice boat. How does she handle?Any lee helm?Do you sail with both foresails unfurled or just one?If both, how is the helm affected(if at all)? Could you sail with the dagger a bit proud of the case and wrap a piece of bungie around the skirt/dagger? A bit like a spray deck on a canoe? I've attatched a pic of the stainless plate, and also a 'thumbnail'of my engine mount. :) I'm toying with 'boxing in' my dagger case up to the deckhead with the idea of gaining more storage space. And also to partition off the bunks, again for better storage, privacy and keep things a bit drier.Allthough the wind blowing through the dagger case when she dries out on the mooring can only be helping air the boat. Also, any internal work would be as light as possible and not structural.

I know the dagger board can go wherever, but I was asking why the cabin trunk doesn't extend to the deck like many of Kurt's other boats, such as the one I'm building right now.

I'd just grab some marine ply, epoxy and triaxial and extend that thing up a couple more feet and be done with it. No little covers to replace over the years and no water inside at all. It would cost next to nothing...

    Just a thought.

    Kurt's boats kick total ***, BTW. :D

    trunk design

I once had a mono (lead dragger) with an open dagger trunk. My speeds topped out at around 11 kts so it is not quite the same, but we had the same water issues until I re-shaped the slot bottom to closely match the foil. I still got some water from pumping/splashing as the foil moved from side to side, but all of the water off the trailing edge stopped. A couple of sponges stopped the rest. The boat seemed a bit faster also. I built a cap but rarely used it as our female crew found the open trunk more appealing than the porta poti. Bruce

ThomD, I will take a picture of the motor mount.

Caiman, one head sail or the other. The inner 145sq' outer 310sq'. Will point higher with inner but move faster with outer up to say 12 knts apparent. After that the smaller sail. Have not figured out optimal VMG.
Both sails have barber haulers for off wind, depends on apparent wind as to which.
Would thoroughly recommend a bow sprit and outer jib (screacher).

As to the helm, neutral to slightest lee helm. Have not established any rule as to the helm. Screacher out, CofE forward, not necesssarily lee helm. Apparent windstrength and direction, CofE, CLR, all very dynamic.

As to the CB case and the water, this is not splashes or surge but a solid head of water pushed up the case and gaiter. The faster the boat the higher the water until for any given speed/ gaiter hight, the water pours over the top.
The short CB case idea does not work in this particular instance.
