I just bought a New Shamrock Inboard Diesil with a Yanmar 240 and while it rides nice and is Wicked Pissa Fast.

It will not throttle down to 1 to 3 knots to troll for Striped Bass.

The boat has a dive platform on it and and I keep her on a Trailer so that I can travel to all the great fishing spots. Even thinking of doing a few Tournaments.

Any of you Designers/ Engineers looking for a Real Time Test Platform for High Powered Electric Triolling Motors?

We could mount a pair on the dive platform which would be in the water at trolling speed but lifts clear at planing speeds.

I can help you with controls design if you wish and will beat the crap; I mean conduct Field Studies of the products for design evaluation and with a comprehensive report of my findings.

There is zero need for HIGH POWERED trolling motors , doesnt matter what pushes at flank , at trolling speeds Minnimokas (SP?) are fine fir 1-4K, unless the breeze blowing over 35K.

Stick a borrowed unit on and be pleasantly suprised.

No replacement for Displacement. as the

As they Say Mo-Power is better.

I typicaly run charters trolling for Striped Bass in Tidal Rivers and we have 10-12 ft tides and 2 to 10 kt currents.

The Striped Bass hold in tight to the Rocks of Jetties and Islands

In order to have complete Redundat Contol of the boat that may be only feet away from sharp jagged rocks I was thinking that a electric trolling motor set up like these. (Twin Units on both Port & Starbord attached to the dive platform) would be the best way to go.

The twin motors an be used in on/off pulses and run like a tractor drive for steering the hull or holding motionless in the current for flyfishermen and spinning fishermen to cast. They can also be run to slow troll the boat.

Problem is that one set of motors runs $1,000 and I would need $2,000 plus xtra cash for the Battery bank and charger system. I figure about $3,000 for the system. While I may be smart and very good looking I just dont have that kind of disposable income after having just bought the brand new boat.

    So. Im looking for Sponsors.

If anyones interested? Give me a shout at

But with electric it requires bigger even heavier batteries, with more charge time to keep them functioning.

You might consider some kind of dragged plate. I.e. something like trim tabs that would push way down and create enough drag to slow the boat at idle.

Drag creates Turbulance and noise that drives away the fish.

And Drag costs Moneny in fuel waste.

so... The Less Drag the Better.

Perhaps its cheaper and more direct to coax the strippers out of their hiding places with Psychological counseling....train the stripers when they are small fry to be more exuberant... people friendly,...like politicians on the vote trail aft a few drinks ....

    pistnbroke,

What type motor and prop are you using and at what rpm? Is the 86lb thrust at 24 or 12V?

what has happened is that Minn Kota have sold the old non electronic design and tooling to China so you can buy Identical and good quality motors from them . You will find them all over ebay.com.au and its all saltwater and top quality..24v for 86lb I use 12v and have tweaked the prop so it draws 25 A at 12v

They are by i force marine 86 lb is $194 at present..spare prop too

I think on ebay.co.uk the same one is bison brand ..it has the same twisted yellow label on the shaft !! but of course dollars are now pounds ......

    Hello Wicked,

Are you aware of this "Shamrock" owners group:

    http://www.fishtheclassic.net/forums/

Great forum of Rock heads, good bunch of peeps.

I've talked with many a striped bass fisherman, weird for me to troll so slow (here we troll at 5 -8 +) but I know some guys "back troll" which means in reverse in order to get down to that "at a crawl" speed. Probably no good in a Rock. Most of the ultra slow trollers I have talked to use a traditional gas kicker.

The torquedo elect outboard would probably do the trick, pricey but the good stuff.

    Good luck,

    Steve
