I started my project many, many years ago. Life keeps getting in the way (5 funerals in 8 months followed by a divorce). Yet I have a 30' hull and the determination to finish what I started. A big part of my decision to built rather than buy was to get a trailerable cruiser that can handle big seas at speed. I could not find anything close to what I wanted in production, so...

I have read several threads here and really enjoyed finding this forum.
The thread I enjoyed most was discussing Strakes & Keel Pads. I want to add a pad to my hull. I intend to belly up to the bar and buy a new Volvo D6DPH 370. Then use the boat for many years, in many places.
It will be a while yet as I am still recovering from that life stuff. In the mean time, I'm researching!

    sTRAKES AND PADS

    Hi
A pad would need to be wide to get any sort of lift , talking up to 18 inchs wide but would be good of you are wanting to trail the boat . I'd also be looking seriously at the strakes and trying to gain a good amount of lift from them as well , like 6 to 9 inchs wide with one on eachside . The placement /length and width needs a lot of careful thought . If you want them to do some work then they also need to be wide .
Silly little things 2 or 3 inchs wide are decoration , a total waste of time and effort and do almost nothing at all .
They also need to be spaced apart so the hull will ride stable and up right when you are at speed !
What sorts of speeds are you predicting the boat will do ?.
Remember ,Women and boats dont mix !! believe me :D

The boat, as per the plans, has strakes in the common layout, 3 per side, the inner most stopping 6' short of the transom. They are narrow, I will be upgrading them in the near future. I was thinking a wide pad, not a flat one though, one with a bevel, like on the "Fountain's".
According to the Volvo rep I spoke with, and the speed/HP chart that comes with the plans, 370 HP should produce a top end in the neighbourhood of 55 mph.

This a sketch of the bottom details.
The existing strakes in black and a possible keel pad in grey.
I drew the pad at 40% of the overall length, 12' and 16" wide.
It is to scale, at least as close as I could make it.

Tiberwolf, I am glad to have found your post. I have been scouring the net for anyone actively building this boat. I am still in the research phase for mine. I plan on building mine using the high-tech fiberglass version, but I thats not set in stone yet. Your hull looks awesome! Can you give me breakdown of your build so far - ie cost, where you got your materials, hours worked per stage etc. Are you obsessed? I cant think of anything else, I spend all my free time trying to get my plans set so I can actually get started. I am fairly certain that I want to use the high-tech version with the Balsa core - your thoughts?

As I stated in my original post, my project was started many years ago. Any costs I quote are seriously out of date.
I built my hull with cold molded mahogany plywood over Douglas Fir framing.
I used approx. 52 sheets of 4mm ply @ $50 per for the skin.
I used 6 or 8 sheets of Fir ply @ $75 per for the transon and some framing.
I don't recall how much material or at what price (more Fir) for the rest of the framing.
I used at least 25 gallons of West System epoxy @ $95 per.
Time? I spent close to a year's worth of week-ends building my hull, but there was also a lot of learning going during that time. That is one thing in favour of building with wood, very forgiving. Made a mistake? No problem, it can be redone. I remember struggling with the shape of the sheer log, a 30' long laminated member that had to be shaped to match the flow of the skin. In the bow area, the skin is both concave and convex, from a variable deadrise to a prodominent flare in the topsides. Working with wood, you cut/sand/plane it down, glue on more wood and reshape!
The first thing you need is a good work space, wood or high tech glass, you need dry, climate controlled shop.
Working with high tech glass, you need to know what you're doing. The foundation has to be perfect. And working time becomes a factor too!
Most of the materials were purchased from a small lumber yard on the shores of Lake Huron.

I would love to see more pictures - can you do any close ups, view from the pilot area, sun deck and cabin? Sorry if I am imposing on you, just trying to get a better look.

Yes I have many pics, most are the old paper format. I will scan a few and post them, but not tonight.

Do you want to see build pics  or just it current semi-finished state?

    What's a sundeck?
Is that the pad over the engine where bikini clad babes sunbathe?

Timberwolf, The reason I would like to see the pics is because my wife is having a hard time picturing 30' . I marked it out for her but it doesn't help, she not able to visualize anything. Any possibility of you going to the Gathering this year and bringing your boat? This is the link if you have not seen it http://www.glen-l.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=8919 .If you do not plan on going is there any way my wife and I might drop in on you for some up close and personal time with the boat and maybe lend a hand for a bit so she can see why we should do this?

Zack, did you look at the picture in this thread? Did you read the caption with it that says," This is where I'm at"? No, I don't intend to haul my unfinished shell down to TN.
You are welcome to come visit me, but I am not working on the boat right now, I am building a new shop since my divorce forced me out of the last one. The new shop has a roof and 4 walls, not much else, yet.

BTW Zack, I started another thread with build pics. Did you see them?
