I have set jury-rigs before, and seen a number of them. The biggest question is really how much mast do you have left to work with. If it is a 40' stick still up, well you are fine, If it sheared at the partners then there probably isn't anything you can do.

The greatest tragedy of this is that she was even allowed to set off on a trip like this. I would never even consider letting a 16 year old solo around the world, and the parents that would allow it should be shot.

May I apply to be the first one to be shot?

My children have had the ability to go to the moon (not only circumnavigating) when they were 8. They did not want that, so we did not bother to buy a boat or rocket.

At 9 they did circumnavigate by accident, we saved a hell ofalot ofmunie to let hem be part of the system, not a hindrance.

    Gents please advise
A handheld Raymarine VHF radio works amazingly well at sea over a couple of miles
why cant a plane talk to her via a simple VHF radio
    what am I missing here?

    Manie,

A plane can talk to a marine VHF if they know the frequency to dial up.

Any search and rescue aircraft worth it's salt can do that.

And they said a french ship was a day away or any time now... if it's a vhf handheld they won't come into range until they're an hour or so away?

What's the coverage of global sat phone now for such emergency situations?

from what i understand the communication was taking place when the plane is overhead and just for a short period each pass, so maybe a few km flying. they are sending another plane that should be close to establish more communication before the rescue boat arrives

There is a massive outcry at SA forums but what gets me is that now the family is raising money for recovery ??? This family is a bunch of media whores.

To find the boat after another couple of days is going to be very difficult.
Gents what I cant comprehend is that the boat is perfectly upright with a working engine and what appears to be enough fuel (and food) to motor to Ile Amsterdam, surely that would have been the prudent thing to do.
Isn't it grossly irresponsible just to leave it floating there, with all the costs already incured why couldn't the fishing vessel at least tow it out of harms way. How difficult could it be to sink that boat?

I would love to know what the "old salts" have to say, especially those that have sailed crazy waters like deep south roaring forties

    Next question
in a vast operation of this magnitude and with so many potential repercussions
shouldn't an experienced person such as the captain of the fishing vessel at least go on board this "stricken vessel" to asess the true state of affairs and give the world a second opinion

at this stage somebody is going to get away with murder "and" make a buck off the deal

    hope i'm wrong

From what I read on her website, she took the decision to give up, and it is her right. You would like to force a 16 years old girl to stay on a dismasted boat, with flooded engine, no satelite phone, in one of the most difficult areas of the planet ?
Amsterdam island is a tricky place, better send her directly to the niagara falls.
I think the captain of the fishing vessel really doesn't care of the boat, his crew certainly risked their lifes to rescue Abby.
