Whoever has the SAR zone pays for the air search, but everyone responds freely.
But in view of the mindless stupidity of sending a schoolgirl down there on a boat like that at this time of year the parents should pay the full cost. Shame on them.

Adult experienced sailors have had touble keeping much bigger open series boats on their feet in the southern ocean. Shocking that they didn't pick a more seakindly forgiving boat for her.

I'm presuming and praying that she's aboard with her electronics knocked out and the boat dismasted.

do you rememberwhen Isa went over, probably the worlds best solo sailor of either gender, Open 60, flat decks they changed after that
Well theAu navy picked her up, way way deep down as far away from land as anywhere on planet
The French were very grateful and our Navy was in their own words thankful to have a real live exercise
It is better than sitting around doing Zilch for them
Point being, if the worlds best can succumb, then yes what hope for a wee lass It is the commercilism that bothers me. I mean why not just get in a boat and bugger off without all the fanfare RAZZAMATAZZ

Right on, Whoosh... A pity 'bureaucracies' and other 'authorities' make doing just that near impossible?

Just my thought, but shouldn't an offshore sailor be able to handle dismasting by setting up a jury rig.. Anyway if she's fine and the boat is upright and sound so let her wait and wait.. no lee shore in sight..
