I am currently building a full keel, heavy displacement sailboat in a garage that is about the same size as yours. It is a tight squeeze but it can be done. I’m building Paul Fisher's Tideway 14. A sailboat that was designed for just such a sail as you are describing. The Tideway 14 is a modern stitch and tape version of the old heavy displacement pocket cruisers that were popular in the 30's and 40's. Her dimensions are: LOD 14'6''; Beam 6'1''; Draft 2'1''; Weight with 700lbs. of ballast 1900 lbs. My sailboat is named: s/v Reunion and I plan to sail her from the Galveston Bay in Texas to the Florida Coast for a reunion of the Space Park Sailors.

The Tideway might just work for you.

I emailed the selway fisher site and they let me know a few designs that could be built in the space I have. I've sent away for study plans and also for the full plans of their strip built kayak.

I'll do the kayak as a first run and if all goes well start the boat after that.

Glad you found some plans that might work for you. Congratulation on your decision to build the kayak. I think you’ll find that there are few things you can build that will give you the satisfaction of building a boat. Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress.
