voyaging canoe hulls

    Straight sided hulls - what disadvantages?
    I see them on voyaging canoes but also on the occassional modern cat and also on outriggers and proa's....
    Proa's i understand due to shunting but the others? Dont they tack 'badly'?
    Asymetric hulls usually have the "flat" side on the inside too....
    Construction should be easier tho? - for voyaging canoe type - as flat keel midsections and rise on each side.
