You don't really think this line of questioning will bear fruit, do you? What is a design clue, if not what Hoyt just gave you?

I have been designing small crafts in steel for 30 years, but have never dealt with a catamaran. Now I need to develop a design for a 20-25 meter catamaran hull for ferrying about 80 passengers. I have no idea of how to fix up the dimensions. That is the reason I wanted some technical paper on the design considerations to be followed. If anyone can help me it will be fine.

    VP,

I'm not a naval architect, but a marine engineer:!: , from what I have seen there is a lot of information about multihull commercial ship design around the net. A lot of recent work has been done. You will even find published codes on the subject.

Just do a google search (or google scholar) on multihull ship design paper and you will return 1000s of good papers.

To get actual design code numbers though, you are probably going to have to buy something from RINA (maybe you are already a member), IMarEST, Lloyds, etc etc.

Good luck - maybe posting a lot more information about your project on here would help generate some interest.

    1. Some catamaran design data is available in Lamb's 'Ship Design and Construction', mainly covering catamaran ferries. This book is available from SNAME.

    2. There is good paper by Müller-Graf 'Resistance and Propulsion Characteristics of the VWS Hard Chine Catamaran Hull Series ’89' on catamaran performance issues.

    3. Recently I have presented a paper at CPBS2010 on power catamaran design, there are some useful graphs to choose hull parameters. This paper should be also available form SNAME.

Thanks for all the help. I am getting on to something.
The one i am designing is a 20-25 m. catamaran ferry, to have seating for 80 passengers for a day cruise. While on this job, I received another enquiry for a catamaran utility boat of about 30-35 meters, carrying about 30 passengers and 2 container cargo. I am wondering if I could make a multipurpose catamaran with a common hull and then modify it to suit any of the requirements. How do you all feel about this idea?

What's driving the length requirement, 80 pax on a 20-25m cat doesn't seem that much. Also, 30-35m sounds big for the load you are talking about, unless the containers will be at full tare or reefers. I'm assuming that your clients have other criteria to drive the length. A modular design would be good, I would have thought both requirements could be met with a similar base vessel, however, the weight and distribution of the containers could be an issue. SNAME looks like a good resource, maybe worth the membership subs!

Thanks for your comments. I think making it modular is a good idea. The utilty boat may carry more cargo that may be the reason for about 30-35 m length.
80 Passengrs can be accomodated in a 20 m length.May be 25 M will require a second deck of passengers. While I was thinking the second deck to be only the wheelhouse.

Looks nice. 20m should then be fine for 80 passengers. I was thinking of having a wheel house at the next higher deck as the crew will not be mixing with the passengers. Is it possible to get a GA of the 50 footer. I can then work on it.

Thinking about it, I have a doubt is there any restricting factor on the clearance between the waterline and bottom pf the cross deck strcuture?
