A light diesel engine of up to 100bhp or so would be much safer and more economical to run but inboard petrol engines have been around for a long time and provided they're installed properly and to local regulations, should be fine. However, the size of your boat dictates that an outboard would be much simpler and lighter and give a better performance.

New and even secondhand outboards are not cheap but they are an instant solution, however, depending on what your existing ouboard is, it may just need some TLC with a very good overhaul and a proper set up with the right prop for your boat and load. If it's old and worn out it will be a waste of time but worth considering otherwise, what engine and model is it?
