Chinese Junk bamboo battens

I have a Colvin Gazelle that has its original PVC battens and I'd like to replace them with bamboo for a more authentic look. The main is 475 sq.ft. with the longest battens 21'. The fore is 230 sq.ft. with the longest battens 14'. Is there a rule of thumb for bamboo O.D. and thickness? What's the right way to size bamboo battens?

The bamboo can be flat sections split from the stalk. I have timber bamboo nearly 40 feet tall growing in my backyard(until the freeze, anyway) that has a wall-thickness over 3/4 inch thick at the base and still 1/4 inch thick more than 20 feet up. It is plentiful from central Florida south.

 

Any particular species that lend themselves to be used as battens?

Any particular internode size on the culms? Long or short?

I have some bamboo of unknown origin in my garden, unknown to me but I am sure my neighbour who planted it in his own garden probably knows what it is.

I would like to plant my own clump so I have a renewable source of battens, just wondering what to look for out of the 1200 species available. I have a good few years before I will need any so it doesn't need to be fast growing.
