Wow, I just read 13 pages of this thread in one night! To start off, I don't think the world is coming to an end because I have A/C in my house, flush toilets and sometimes drive a car. There is more than ample proof that the temperature of the world is not substantially higher now than it was a 120 years ago at the end of the Little Ice Age. There are still crops that were grown in parts of Europe in the Medieval Warm Period that can not be grown today because it is too cold. During the Bronze Age the temp was substantially higher than it is today, and still the planet survives.

There is no energy shortage, only a lack of will on the part of our leaders to allow the energy to be produced. At present, the US is only utilizing less than 20% of its known energy reserves while telling everyone we have a crisis. The only crisis is the abject stupidity of our so-called leaders.

Now that doesn't mean I believe we should waste resources and foul the earth, water and sky. I believe all a designer can do is try to design a boat that best fits the needs of his client, while making it as fuel and materials efficient as possible considering his clients budget. I have written about making boats simpler, lighter and more efficient on my own website. But the boats still have to meet the clients needs!

Most boats are actually sold for fishing here in the US, and as such they are considered a tool to get you to the fishing grounds. A fishing boat that can only go a few miles from home and take a couple hours to do it will not find many buyers. The trick in the future is going to be designing boats that maintain the higher speeds many customers want, but using less power to do it.

There is a "trick" that the future will teach that will allow the (kinda) efficent use of the battlewagon. Leave at 2:00 instead of 6:00. Use the horsepower only to charge the next bait patch, or whatever.

But then, what caused the average inboard cruiser price increase from 250 000$ 10 years ago to over 600 000$ in 2008 on the US market ?

The problem of leisure requirement is very hard. I think dreaming is part of the requirement. Nordhavn built his image on passagemaking and around the world sailing. They launched a transatlantic rally in 2004 when they had above 500 customers. They were 70 boats interested in that rally. But only 35 that get registered. And a mere 17 started the rally. Nordhavn still has his passagemaking image. But they preferred to cancel further edition (2006) of that rally.
And if you match the boat with what these customers really do with it, you will simply cut at least 50% of the customer base who is just buying a dream.

Greenwashing is just a marketing argument to try to increase sales as valid as other marketing arguments.

What makes me laugh is a over hundred tons of material, buring thousand liters of fuel per hours just for the leisure of a few may be called "green" if you put two solar panels on top :p

Consider GOLD went from about $260 to $1200 or so , and you will have the answer.

ALL govs are deeply in deeply and the "easiest" cure (to them) is to destroy the value of debt (and your savings) by intentionally inflating (destroying the value) of the currency.

Boats are made from commodities , oil, copper, SS that all go "up" in price as the currency's value is destroyed.

So, Porta... When are you guys getting married? ;-)

I have never seen a post on here when one guy so totally agrees with the comments of another, that all they have to say is:

    "I Agree, FWIW"

Yikes! Or are you guys Brothas from Anotha Mutha?.... ;-)

I agree that there is an inflation part, but in the same time, average car price have not increased that much.

"but in the same time, average car price have not increased that much.

Productivity assembeling a car in 1/2 to 1/5 the man hours lowers the cost of any mass production item.

Most boats are not machine assembeled , so for the most part their built by hand.

The car interior is formed plastic , the yachts has far more hand work.

"Accessories" are cheapest to machine assemble , ever wonder why most cars have heat , radios, air cond , power windows ,as stock?
Cheaper to stick it in everything from the start.

You´re a nice guy Chris! (at least in the eyes of your mother I hope)

But why are you wasting your precious time here with us idiots?

Why are you trying to solve the most demanding problems of the yachting world?

And why NOT doing just what you´ve been paid for?

Draw the plans, as you promised your customer????

If it's really a concern of yours, rest easy. Everything is going just fine, Richard. Go read the rest of the post you have linked. Maybe you'd like to have copies of the email that have been exchanged between myself and my client. Would that put you at ease? Perhaps I should leave the door to my bathroom open so that you can watch me in there as well. I mean, seeing as how you're so curious about me, and all. ;-) (... right there, that's one of those humor characters I mention below)

The content of the post I made above was very openly designated with the little smiley faced dudes. In the Interent world, this means that the comments are made in jest and are all about the sharing of a sense of humor. You do have a sense of humor, don't you, Richard?

Get rid of the wedgie you have deeply implanted and learn how to laugh, you old fart. ;-) There... there's one of those little face thingies again. Take heed and learn to laugh at yourself and the rest of the world, as well. Do it with a measure of care and you'll be a much happier guy.

FWIW....for what it's worth (in my case usually not much manie.)

BTW (by the way ;) ) nice boat you're building in your garage!

Take a look at this article I found today. Read it carefully and notice that the manufacturer is thinking "outside the box" here. Notice how they are in the formative stages of (at least trying to) create a market for new technologies.

I especially like the idea of the "muscle car" in the last paragraph.

What we own is, at least to an extent, a reflection of who we are.

Who do you want to be?

I do not need to put my muscle boat into quotation marks. I have a real muscle boat:
