New to the boat scene and have a repower question.

I took your advice and did find a decent Bayliner forum in which I guy did this exact swap in the exact same boat!!
I have sent him an email and will hammer some details on what's involved out with him.

Hi to all the experts I have a Bayliner 2859 with bravo II . What about the GM 6.5 with turbo ? I have one in one of the P/U with well over 200,000 on the clock good milage and power ok. Not a cummins but a rebuild can be had for $ 5500.00 or get an old one and build it. Check out Pensular Diesel for parts,Marine Exhaust Syst. of Alabama Inc. Fritz

 

For reliability reasons, I wouldn't run a 6.5 GM Diesel. Just my opinion of that engine.

LBZ You are corect in the rep. that the 6.2 and 6.5 have but the have worked in some boats ? For some time I have been thinkingof repowering with a Diesel . So would you post as to the end results of your project ? Fritz

 

I found a contact in Vancouver B.C. A guy that has done exactly what I am wanting to do in a similar boat just a few years newer. He went with a volvo also and it looks like if I go the same route, I will be on the hook for about $30,000 canadian all said and done. A little less actually after I sell my engine but realistically, it will still be $30 000 likely due to un-forseen issues that always happen with these kind of project.

Not sure when I will start this project, but rest assured, I will keep you guys updated on the step by step as it goes on with pictures!!

So, which Volvo engine do you have in mind?

 

It's just me but I would think twice about a Volvo. The swedes are fine engineers but way too proud of their spare parts. They make a quality motor but you pay for it down the road.

Wally and Fred: Yup, fully agree on the Volvo's (and of course words on Swedish engineers....), that's why I asked, because there are bad and notsobad Volvos as well (the 41 series is ok as well as the earlier 70/71 series). I put Volvo on my black list years ago after one year having installed eight Volvo diesels in as many workboats; seven of them had to see warranty service within weeks. There was anything from plate brackets breaking off, to electrical shorts and severe lack of power (due to wrong calibration of injection pump).

The response from factory representatives was arrogant and ignorant, so no more Volvos for my production!
