I'm an undergraduate student from a university . Currently , I'm doing a case study report regarding of a small boat company upgrading their system . In this proposal , I need to recommend this company to use a software to design boats as they usually used hand wirtten method on thier design before that. This company is a totally tarditional and small and never use computer to design their boats before .

As they give a linited budget for me , I need to find a cheaper and suitable software for them . As I know PolyCad is a free download software but I'm not sure it can meet my requirement or not . Can it design boats or just only edit the hull designs project .

I prefer a free software as I think it's better to let the company have a try with a computerized-design first and let them consider to use which product when they are get used to this new method of designing .

Please give a a hand pls.......

    what type of boats?

Perhaps if you describe the type of boats they would like to design, someone could help.

I tried a few years ago to find a free CAD and Hull design program. I didn't find one. I have been using MiniCAD for over 14 years. It works well, but, I did not want to pay another upgrade.

Look at linux or open source programs. To help you sell them look at other programs that give free downloads of demo software. TouchCAD was the least expensive Mac marine design program I found. Bought it and like it.

I tried SDN or SND something like that. The developer is a from Spain. It had potential but it was not a finished program. It crashed all the time. (Mac version)

Design covers a lot of different areas, you need to be able to define the hull shape of the vessel, analyse it's hydrostatics and stability, calculate its resistance and powering requirements, possibly evaluate its motions in a seaway, and finally define all of the parts required to build it. These functions cannot be done by a single program, and we have a suite of programs to cover these individual requirements.

As you are still a student, please download the free copy of Maxsurf on the Maxsurf academic web site, as well as the tutorials and manuals for our other programs.
