i'm interested in building an RC pirate ship. i can build the ship out of fiberglass with a wood frame, but i have no knowledge on the water proofing necessary or how you add the RC controls. obviously, i'm not looking for a racing boat. speed is not a necessaty. but any help in designing and building such a ship would be greatly appreciated. i have never seen an RC Pirate sailing ship. i would like to build one. any help is welcome,
    thanks.

Thanks Steven(the check is in the mail)
One can find much information on the American Model Yachting website: www.amya.org
Look into the Vintage group(talk to or e-mail Earl Boebert) You might also check the scale section of the Windpower forum (also listed on the AMYA website)
If you don't find what you need post back here and I'll see if I can be of any further help. As a matter of fact post back here any way-I'd like to hear of your progress....Good Luck!

One thing to keep in mind is that the model will need a lower center of gravity relative to its size than a full sized ship.... so you should probably be thinking in terms of an external bulb keel even though sailing ships of old didn't have them.

Because heeling moment scales with the scale factor^3 and stability with the scale factor^4, a 1/20 model will need 20 times the relative stability to carry the scaled sail area to roughly the same wind speed as a full sized ship. Even if you intend to carry full sail to only half the wind speed that a full sized ship would you'll still need about 5 times the stability relative to the boat's size.

The good news is that you should be able to build the masts relatively lighter, which will help.

    Cheers,
    Stephen

What kind of ship is a pirate ship? How would it differ from any other ship? Are you looking for a 1600 ship (Walter Raleigh?), or a 1700 ship (?), or an 1800 ship (Jean Lafitte)?

    yeah,
although i had planned to add weight to the bottom of the ship, and make the top half lightweight, what you are saying makes perfect sense. i kinda figured i'd have to add the "keel"? to the bottom of the ship for proper balance. forgive me but i'm new to the watercraft hobby and i'm not familiar with all the terms, but i got a good idea what you're talkin about. thanks for the input, any help you and others can offer is appreciated.
    we salute you.

in answer to what kind of ship is a pirate ship?
i dont know, i used that as a generic term, i havent picked out a particular ship to model yet, still researching. maybe you can suggest the type of ships that were used the most by so called pirates? all i know is the ships i've seen in movies. i cant identify a particular ship, i'm new to the hobby. still looking for that special ship that has that distinct quality. the cannons, the sails, all those distinct details that make them stand out.
i'm not particular to the 1600's or 1700's. etc.
i'm just looking for a beautiful ship to model. and add that final detail, the skull and crossbones flag.

ok, anybody ever see the movie Mysterious Island? there was a pirate ship in that movie, what ship was that? that ship looks simple to build as far as the hull. or how bout the ship in the disney movie, pirates of the caribbean? what ship was that the pirates had? if you can identify them, tell me what they are, then i can look up blueprints or plans on the ship and go from there.
    thanks,
    G
