I don't think Wind Horse is for sale: Steve is planning to cross the Atlantic for the Bahamas soon. Berthon are agents to sell the production FPB 64 yachts.

I agree with you Tad, Idelwild is still asking a silly price.

 

That's quite possible - I just saw her lined up in the brokerage area when I arrived. I haven't seen her listed.

Windhorse is a neat looking boat and if you have tons of money a good choice for journeys across the oceans. Steve Dashew likes to do about 300 miles a day and costs of about $3.00 per mile traveled equates to $900.00 per day. With all the other gizmos included, maintence, depreciation, and frequent repairs the actual costs run into thousands of dollars per day.

Do you believe that owners spending millions on a newbuilt boat care about 100$ more or less per day?

3. People that have made millions due care about $100.00, by careful accounting is sometimes how the became millionaires.

Just because some people spend thousands of dollars per day cruising does not mean that is for everyone. Some prefer different, more cost effective cruisers even if they can afford something like Windhorse.

 

You don´t understand that windhorse is already the cost effective cruiser here.
And thousands per day is just your phantasy, not the real world data.

re. Operating cost of Wind Horse: Steve's published articles on operating cost (most recent is http://setsail.com/operating-costs-sail-vs-power/ ) suggest $2.67/mile to run the FPB. At 11,000 miles per year (Steve's figure) plus about $9000 a year for storage/hauling/launching (again, Steve's figure), that's a bit over 38 grand per year to run the boat. There's insurance on top of that- which Steve says is about 0.6% for an FPB in its typical use- plus whatever it costs to feed, clothe and heal the crew.

Comparing per-mile costs to per-year costs has to be done on a miles per year basis, not miles per day. Wind Horse can knock off 250 miles a day easily, but only does so for perhaps a month and a half out of the year. Like virtually all non-commercial boats, she'll be docked or at anchor most of the time.

Is it a cheap boat? No, not by the standards most of us would have to use. But compared to its real competition- luxury ocean passagemakers in the $2M to $5M range- it is undoubtedly the practical, cost-effective member of the fleet.
