Too young to remember anyone not still working ;) so,

Fexas - for his original Midnight Lace
Levi - cause I just love looking at his drawings
Michael Peters - for Alpha Z
Our very own Tad - The boats you've posted in the galleryare surely some of the prettiest creations ever to hit the water. Oh - and the Hinkley Picnic boat....
Arronow - the original Cigarette (was that his actual design?)

There are others - and I'll add them as they come to mind.....

I can't believe no one has mentioned John Alden. His schooners are perfection.

    :)

For schooners I have to vote for William J. Roué (it's a matter of national pride). ;)

    PAR Yacht Designer/Builder

Bolger has produced some very fine examples of ship and yacht, though is known for some of the ugliest stuff (although usually clever) afloat.

Jay Benford was still at his office on the eastern shore last time I was in town (where I grew up) and had an interesting 65' motor yacht on the board. This was a few years ago, but I think he's still producing. His work being rather salty indeed.

There are, literally thousands of designers (okay, mostly dead) who's work inspired many. American schooners alone would fill a large volume (though many European schooner designs where produced, most didn't look as good nor go as well as ours for some reason) There should be a dead schooner designer society somewhere.

The artwork of Capt. Nat and his boy, or Van Deusen, Hollingsworth, Bill Gardner, Burgess and Lawlor has passed long over the side unfortunately. Even Howard Chapelle, who I never thought of as much of an artist, was a very fine eye for the beauty in a set of lines. I met him before he died, wow, what a brilliant mind, firmly entrenched in his believes.

I still believe in the magic of a beautiful yacht, though I've seen very few in recent years, most being triangles of uncompromising utility and ugliness. The last 1/2 of a knot to wind be damned, I'd rather sail in stately grace and style. Besides, I might spill my beer if I could point 4 degrees higher and that's no way to live, nor a design to tolerate, except in races or to sell to folks whom have the credit and don't know the difference in riding a force 6 and building in LFH's Bounty compared to a Santa Cruz 50. I've done both and I'll have the Bounty anytime . . .

I've got to chase down some epoxy dribbles. Finally coming into the time of year where I don't have to do epoxy work at night to beat the heat of the day.
