Apologies Richard... I thought perhaps you were suggesting that I was going to pinch Iren's work...

Alik - that I have to say is nothing short of extraordinary!

I enjoyed the excerpt from Michael Kasten, thanks. The same thing happens to me all the time. I think all professional designers get this same kind of story, probably every week. I have said on occasion before that if I ever retire and write a book, it will be called: "I want to build a boat, but I don't have any money." It will be a compilation of all the crazy design requests I get from possible customers coming in over the transom.

As for the LDL designs from Nigel, I agree that you should simply contact him, and now that you have, hopefully he will reply. I listened in on Nigel Iren's recent interview on Professional Boatbuilder Radio a few weeks ago, and he talked a lot about the LDL project. There is nothing new there--narrow boats always have low horsepower requirements compared to wider boats, and the style of the design is tailored to the builder, his client. He may not be able to give you those precise drawings, because usually we designers are asked to provide designs special to the client who requests protections that the plans will not be sold to anyone else. This happens frequently.

Hay Eric, I'd like a family cruiser, with shoal draft, standing headroom, three separate cabins and good sailing performance, especially to windward. It should utilize the 55 gallon drums gathered in my front yard, so a pontoon style sailboat, with trailerable beam, under 26' in length please? Do you have a stock design that fits these parameters? My budget is $500, unless I get more from grand dad at graduation . . .

That's exactly right--that's the kind of stuff I get! You probably get it, too.

We all know these gnomes I guess.
Your boat on display is 12m and the tag is 100, I would like exactly that boat, but do´nt need the fancy Radar and the searchlights. Ahh, we are a big family so could you add just some 3 or five meter to it? >No problem Sir, thats about 350 then<
Are you mad? Three times the price for a few meter hull? And the Radar?

I think you guys may be painting the original poster somewhat unfairly with a heavily tarred brush. Most would-be builders start with some inspiration from other boats and many designer's offer stock plans for smaller boats that are priced in the hundreds, rather than the thousands that would typically be required to produce a custom design.
Ok - you may be right - he might want the bell's and whistles for nothing... but shouldn't we give him the benefit of the doubt?

wow, you guys need to take a couple deep breathes and relax a little. like willallison, don't jump to conclusions. i'm looking for a little help from experienced builders and designers. so far i've been called a toad, a fat toad and a gnome. very welcoming, thank you all, so far this has been such a wonderful learning experience.

i would be more than happy to purchase the drawings, just like all the other drawings i have bought from three different canoe builders.

this website has a section on free boat plans and numerous other websites and books have many more. i really just wanted a little advice or help finding something close to the design of the elektra.

i wrote nigel and i'm waiting for a reply.

You're absolutely correct Will, though I was just having fun with Eric and not intended to be disrespectful of the original poster. My last post was an actual request I got a couple of years ago, BTW. It was a phone call and it was the best I could do to keep from laughing hysterically, when the 55 gallons drums entered the conversation. I had these mental images of this guy's house, probably a double wide, lots of drums and a mean dog on a chain, tied to a spent Chevy small block . . .

Matt76 - It's all too easy, on a forum, for things to get sidetracked a bit. You disappeared from the thread for all of three days- only an instant in the real world, but in cyberspace it's long enough for the Self-Propagating Spiral of Online Nuttiness to set in. Most of the above comments haven't been directed at you- it's just a bunch of engineers, builders and designers who got on a roll with the "I had this client that".... stories.

Your taste in boats, I must say, is impeccable. Nigel Irens has a way of coming up with absolutely gorgeous designs that just happen to be ridiculously efficient at the same time.

PAR, now, don't be so quick to shoot down 55-gallon-drum sailboats. You're depriving those of us who hang around deteriorating free launch ramps of some much-needed entertainment :D

I'm back from 30 days vacation in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, The gateway to the Smoky Mountains National Park and I'll build any boat for $99.95 a foot.
Or so said Earl Shiebe but I'll even beat his price and throw in the cost of freehand drawings. Stan

Yes, sometimes Customers and their requests make Designers smile...

D: 'This space we need for exhaust line'
C: 'I don't want exhaust here. Can we make it through the toilet?'

    Calm down matt76,

    if that was´nt your statement:
I would´nt have posted the Michael Kasten article, so, initially YOU made us doubt you have a serious inquiry.
It was never meant calling you a toad or gnome personally.

    Thanks for your comment marshmatt.

Stan that was a Offer! I´ll possibly nail you down on that.

    Regards
    Richard
