    RHP I agree
a man should be able to live in peace

and the tacks thing was funny
    I read that as well
    but
he was the first and one of the best
    the man could sail
    no doubt about it
    and navigate dam well to

but in these times things are just different
the world has changed and unfortunately good people must also change
I would rather count coup any day
but there are times when thats just not possible
as there are desperate people who do desperate things

Eventually nothing.. Bad things happen to good people and nothing can prevent that.
We can try to make our ods better by doing wise and cautious decisions, or go ahead and see and enjoy the wonders of the world without any worries.
I will never hide behind walls and gates. Instead I can mush dogs in frozen wilderness, fly with triglider, dive the oceans or walk around in a latin american city alone.

Well, I suppose that there were mitigating circumstances - the pirates were fleeing "harsh" conditions on a fishing trawler. I hope that their aspirations weren't dashed with this unfortunate hullabaloo. Can we all just get along? - misunderstood prophet Rodney King

The island they were anchored off is not far from land. This is very shallow water indeed.
    Harsh conditions?

This action is from pure ignorance ,--even the dinghy which they intended to steal would cause alarm. What would Burmese be doing with a dinghy. They do steal a dinghy sometimes and sell it back to you saying it broke free in the night. Always put it on the davits or a halyard.
I am suspicious of fishermen saying they had no food, cant they catch fish?

Another island nearby "Boulon le" has a school on it and a community.

This is a very strange area for piracy.

There are tourist ferries in this area travelling from Isnad to Island with accomodation on it.

This island is on route to the ship yard that most people use in Satun

Frosty, I guess the Burmese fellas though it was a good idea at the time, you know, wealth tourists, fancy boat, pleant for us to rob etc etc....i doubt they think it was so smart anymore, but too late, the damage is done.

It will cost Thailand some in cruising yachties too now.

Two advices are useful in this situation:
    - Keep lookout then boat is anchored.
    - Do not fight the thief! 'Take it and go away!' - this should be right action.

I'll bet nobody would steal a dinghy from him.. maybe a few acres of hunting ground but not a dinghy...

Ever hear of Danegeld? Back along the English as an emerging nation had some problems with the maurauding Danes, so they paid them to go away, they came back the next year for more money...........eventually we got the idea and a chap called Alfred raised an army and kicked butt!

Giving in to pirates is the same damn thing.............

Your boat has you and your wife......thats it, been at sea for a few weeks drop anchor for a rest! remeber your both absolutely bushed - you got to take a chance and get some sleep in some time. So yes the right thing to do is keep a watch but just remember who we are dealing with, not only that most people are pretty decent, and if we didn't believe that we wouldn't be sailing would we?

Safe the guy --Malcolm was 63 years old--bit like yourself,--he owned a chain of coffee shops in Uk. They did not report any where he was a retired Marine with martial arts experience!!!

As you say Alfred raised an army and TRAINED them in fighting.

This took action about 6 miles offshore from a major town.

This was not 100 miles of Sudan or Socotra.

This would be the same as getting pirated up the Solent off Southsea beach.

As a normal person trying to fight (something you have never done in your life ) would ensure your loss and that of your wife. Wouldnt it be better to ackowledge your weakness and use it to good stead , give him the fking dinghy and buy a new one for Fks sake. Cheaper than a good funeral these days.

    Your watching too much WWF.

Although I say this,-- in THIS particular case it would appear that a gun would have been successful on the 3 dumb kids,-- but then its rare to get 3 dumb kids pirating you.

I left Langkawi on the day after this incident. I sat with some friends of theirs going to meet Malcolm and his wife in Satun. We were not aware of the day before.

Satun has a haul out fascility and a fishing fleet of some size. The island is often used as a overnight safe spot.

Pirates deserve what they get. I vote for immediate sumary excecution. If I say "take what you want, please don't kill us", I will lose.......................
I do not like losing when life is the bet. Shoot first and ask questions later. they are on or almost on, YOUR BOAT...........

Try to avoid them getting on boat - keep lookout, increase speed, manoeuvring, etc.

If they are already on boat - do not fight unless You are Rambo.

Actually these are recommendations to commercial mariners having security officer these days. It is smart to follow on pleasure boats also.
