1-part Topside Primer over 2-part Primer

Stan - you need to get rid of all the 1 part primer. Call Interlux, they will tell you the same thing. You cannot paint 2 pack epoxy paints over one part anything. I went through the same thing and had to spend 2 days sanding off a primer I was not sure of (1 part or 2) to gelcoat.
To do it right the 1 part primer must also come off.

 

after sanding a small sample area,,take your 2 part primer, and brush a little 3 inch square,,wait 48 hours,,take a razor blade and make a " tic-tac-toe" design,,try lifting the 2 part awl-grip primer from ya boat,,if ya sanded right,, i guarantee you wont be able to peel off the awl-grip primer from your SANDED 1 part primer,,,,,but before ya do that,,, do the same thing to the boat now,,see if you can peel ya 1 part primer of ya hull,,,if not that means its there,,,then go and do ^above,,,,if your primer thats on there now has adhered to ya boat,,then awl grip will stick to it,,,,but if your 1 part primer thats on there now isnt "stuck",,,then awl grip will still stick to ya primer,,,,,till it falls off WITH it hehe

 

Hi, so I looked into the awlgrip "system" and read a lot about it and decided to use it. After going to my marina, the owner said he can get the interlux perfection at a special price. After I did the math, it came out to be almost half as expensive as awlgrip. Since perfection isn't that much worse than awlgrip, I bought all the necessary primers and solvents to go with it. Now that I have had time to catch up on this thread, I read that the two primers aren't compatible. I don't really care about the underlying primer falling off as much, it's just that I don't want them to react and completely destroy my project.

What should I do?

 

interlux isnt even close to awl-grip,,,,but thats nothing big,,your last sentence is the worst thing ANYONE could say before they paint their boat,,,not care about ya underlying paint????whats the paint your using going to STICK too?,,,yup,,,your OLD PAINT,,,,and if your old paint falls off,,,what goes with it???yup,,your NEW PAINT. in fact its the very FIRST thing you need to worry about.
that said,,,as long as your OLD primer is adhered to ya boat,,,,,,,then all ya gotta do is sand it,,,and put ya yucky(jus playing) inter. primer on it,,,but make SURE your old primer is adhered.

Stan is going to roll and tip Interlux, and Stan the way you are talking it doesn't sound like you are planing to keep the boat very long. If you were you would be going that extra mile. No doubt you will get a decent looking finish that might get you through one summer, but by this time next year you will be asking about Awl grip if you haven't sold the boat by then.

Just wondering how this wound up. Any success Stan with the two part topcoat? I was thinking about using a one coat primer then using an two part awlgrip topcoat. It would save me a lot of money avoiding 545

 

Normally, you can put epoxy primer over just about anything, and put 2 part PU over any epoxy primer. You cannot put 2 part PU over over oil, latex, acrylic whatever, or any one component paint. It will eat it up and look like sh#t. Epoxy is almost always a safe primer for any paint.
