Money, a sheep, bag of onions and a jar of whiskey:D Actually, since this boat is not build on a fixed price contract, it is a matter of confidentiality between me and the client....

Wynand i think what he should have asked is what such a hull and deck would cost nowadays. I think with the frightening price and cost increases in South Africa the cost of Waratah is not that important. I have been absolutely shocked at what i found in my research, please tell me am i mad - or close to the mark ???

    Rent for premises
    Steel
    Labour
15 % management fee (at least!)

Total bare hull and deck R 500 000.00

Actually Manie, last year December my client and myself went to Macsteel - the national giant in steel retail - and we were assured no steel increase before about may this year. The fact of the matter was we were then hit with an increase during January and quite a few thereafter, I think four in total. Steel went up within five months by the tune of about 60%:!:

All this **** happened after that Mittal coolie took over our steel manufacturing from ISCOR.....monopoly?

Manie, projected completion date is mid/end November and she will be sitting in my workshop until about Feb/March next year when my client will be having time available for the launch and sea trails.
The launch will be at Durb's and when the boat is all sorted out, she will have a shakedown cruise to Richardsbay where she will be berthed until August for the favourable weather window to sail her across the Indian ocean to Phuket, Thailand, her home port.

Hopefully I will have the keys whilst she is sitting it out in Richardsbay Manie, and we can go have a ball - women, booze, rock & roll and go catch a few Marlin whilst we at it. :D:idea:

    What is going on...

    Hi,

I'm looking at your web site ( www.steelboatbuilder.com ) and thanks for the lots of tips and info about boatbuilding.

I'm following the building stages of the Waratah from that web site but I think it's been a long time since last update.

Hey Wynand , [at the risk of you having had a bad day ] my old man was a boilermaker 45 odd years in the trade , his comment to me I recall was steel will expand 7 times it's thickness when rusting !.

Pedantic , yes, but out of curiosity , I wonder what the actuall amount is ?.

I do know it's a real bugger when it starts rusting between double skined chassis rails on a truck as the resultant heave can render the truck redundant .
Only way to stop it before it gets that far is to squirt waste oil & diesel so it capillaries into the rails and stops it developing any further -- and thereafter every 6 months or so.

Lovely job on the boat , you're a machine !!. Us home build guys who are taking years, not weeks , well, I'm not sure to be encouraged or depressed :D .
I tend to think it would have been better to have had someone like yourself build a boat for the likes of me and me stick to my knitting [ do what I do to make a coin ] than " waste " so much time on building myself !?.:(

I read somewhere that steel oxidizes to about 25 times the material thickness under ideal conditions.
I cannot vouch for that, but perhaps MikeJohns can comment on that:?:
