Alright Much, its been a couple a months since I finished the R&T of my boat with Awlgrip. I like the way it cleans up and it looks pretty good all around. I am glad I did it.

BUT. I keep my boat outside. It rains from time to time. There are a few places where a small amount of water will stand for days after a good rain. Some of these places the paint has peeled. So what the (*^*% am I supposed to do, run out to the storage facility with a towel every time it rains? The most expesnive paint in the world can't get wet?

somehow the water is getting under the paint,,that said,, if the puddle stays there for a while, and the sun comes out,, that standing water is like a magnifying glass,,,,i would blame the fairer,, seems he forgot a spot ;)
do you have any primer and top coat left? ,, and how BIG is this spot?.
awl isnt spose to be "bottom" paint,,, and standing water is the same a underwater line painting.

its happened in 2 places, the little wallered out spot just in front of the deck drains at the transom and in a locker in the cabin, rain came in threw a leaking Bomar hatch and left a puddle in the corner of the locker. Both spots are about the side of a quarter. Water sat there for maybe 4-5 days or so.

I have both primer and top coat left. But at least the place in front of the transom will always hold water after a rain. A little area bout the size of your palm.

i would say ya got a pinhole in the paint,, allowing the water in under it,, i would tape off the area and fair the ones you can, and sand down the other and take a brush and prime and top coat those areas,, and make a THICK tape line,, and the top coat i would wet sand to blend. it really shouldnt have done that after 3 or 4 days,, so i would suspect the pin holes,,,after primer and that sanded,, take a light and look REAL close,, you should be able to see any holes,,,,, man sorry it did it to ya,,,it shouldnt have :(

I have more painten to do round the helm and some in the cabin this Fall, will try and fix these spots then. That last go round wore me out and I had to leave a little for later or I would never fish this Summer.

Since these are low spots, I was thinken that maybe the paint flowed there and was a tad thick and that maybe caused it? Remember snailen it.

ohhh,,,snailing,,, fergot lol,,,ya that could of happened too ,,if your painting later,, i would do the fairing and redo them spots,,and since your snailing i dont think you'll need the thick tape line,, you might be able to blend it with the brush ,, i'd ask Kapt. bout that ,, ( even though he wouldnt of ever had to do it,, he may know someone that has hehe ;) )

    Guys,

It bears stating though some of you already know, that Awl Grip or any other type of topcoat polyurethane paint is not WATERPROOF! It is highly WATER RESISTANT, but not waterproof. If water sits on it long enough, you will have problems. Bottom paint is water proof, most others are not. That's why 'Grip s not for below the waterline.

I remind people of this from time to time about car paint as well and they usually tell me I'm F.O.S. but it's still true (not the F.O.S. part but the waterproof part :D ) Many years ago I used to work in a body shop that rebuilt a lot of wrecks. Now and again we'd get one that went into the drink. We got a late model Benz once that went swimming for a week. Now the Benz has top of the line polyurethane paint. And all over it was covered in little tiny blisters full of water. Whole car had to be stripped. Fortunately the primer they dip the bodies in IS waterproof but the topcoat is not.

Just rained last night, now have to take the 20 mile trip with a towel to keep it from happening in a few other spots. Maybe I am not liking this so much anymore.

i think you need a NEW fairer,,, all them spots should have shown up before and REALLY good after the primer.

These are places where water will stand because of the design and shape of the boat. Not becuase I didnt level something.

then i would go with the "to thick" paint,,,and it takes a LONG LONG time for it to fully cure when snailing it,,,specially if it thick.
