Well, lesson one from YDS has just arrived! :D
Just gotta get me a decent drafting board/table.
I've decided to do it in both CAD as well as manual, mostly because the more skills the merrier I reckon.
I've also been partly volunteered by my father to help repair a boat. Just a wee thing. I think his exact words were 'if you're so keen to start designing or building boats, you can start by fixing this one' :p

    Shug,

I am clueless about boat design as well. I love boats and have always been interested in the design. My father used to build small one man fishing boats but he passed away while I was young, so he did not have the opportunity to pass what he know along to me.

Be of good cheer a lot of marine architects are 'clewless' about good boat design too!! But they still make a living out of it!

    How about designing pondsailers?

Tell me if I am in the wrong place, please.
I am interested in the design process to design and build square rigged pond boats about four feet on the designed water line. I have sailed Steel, Chapman & Hutchinson Ltd's brig, but I want a smaller, lighter boat, say 4 ft lwl and ready to sail weight of 30 lbs or less. I have never been able to get my boat design software to work so I will probably have to do a build and try system until I get what I am looking for. I expect with enough fiddling around I can calculate a hull displacing 30 pounds with most of the weight in a lead bulb on the bottom of a fin so the draft is 12-14 inches (the depth of the nearest pond at the edges), and then I will have to try out masts, yards and sails of various sizes until I learn the right sizes for various wind speeds.
    Any suggestions might be helpful.
    Thanks
    George S

    Ah Good Luck 'shug'...

    Hello...

There is a lot of freeware out there that is OK - probably already posted...

Greg Carlson - see http://www.carlsondesign.com/#Fun_Shareware - very useful and good clean code...

Get a VRML and other viewer - see http://www.parallelgraphics.com/products/cortona/ ...

I think Freeship is still available - see http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=140466 ...

    Rhino demo - see http://download.rhino3d.com/eval/?p=25 - also Proteus Rhino Marine - see http://www.rhinomarine3d.com/ ...

Myself - I just gave in and went to the yards - I like building the damned things - but my back and knees are telling me to get out...;)

    Hi,

I like the fact that you are using both paper, and the computer...

Welcome to the silly boat design forum!
