Hello all, I need to know how to connect the alternator to the external Hitachi voltage regulator / battery / panel. I've seen a couple of photocopied owners manuals available on the web, but the quality is so poor I cannot make out where the wires go to !. Thanks. Steve

Have you tried the Hitachi web site?

Tried the Hitachi website, nothing i'm afraid. Done searches with Yahoo and Google and no luck until about an hour ago! I've come across a clear copy of the YSE8 wiring diagram and managed to connect everything up as it should be. Fired up engine and battery voltage started to rise SLOWLY. Stopped engine, put my digital ammeter in line, fired it up again and found it is only charging at 1.5Amp max. Any ideas? Thanks. P.S. I cleaned the relay contacts in the external regulator, new wiring and good connections on regulator and alternator.

Is the battery fully charged? The Alternator won't charge a battery that is close to 100%. Did you increase the engine RPMs? Some alternators have cut out circuits that won't allow it to charge until the RPMs rise above a certain level. Allows easier engine starting because of less load on the engine.

Battery is only about 30% - 40% charged (12.2Volts with multimeter), starting to struggle turning engine over. Took RPM to over 2000 which is where the charge was only about 1.5Amps. The alternator has no circuitry other than output diode, the regulation is done by the external voltage regulator.

Might have to strip alternator down tomorrow, means I don't get to play on the boat

    Thanks.

Give me a day or two and I will dig through my PC and email it to you. It's very clear but the colours are in Dutch or similiar! Doesn't matter though, very simple. Thanks.
