Seeking Info on 1979 Aqualark Outboard

Aqualark hull repair

Need some help,since I am restoring and noticed a soft belly...just the bottom keel and just below the taper at the bow for a short distance toward stern. It is likely going to need to be cut and cored...anyone with experience? Better yet:anyone with a drawing or pictures of what I may find inside and underneath??? I have stripped all the paint and also powerwashed the hull,so I am prepared for the effort right now-shoot,it can't be more than 100 degrees out there! Anyway,all hardware and trimmings are removed right now...and if anyone is local in NJ,perhaps you may want to quote me co$t? WOW-let me tell you how hard it is to remove paint! The previous owner applied paint on top of the old gelcoat. The gelcoat was probably mostly OK,and it seems the guy simply sprayed above that with dark colors. I have used CitriStrip...and its been three or four blasts with the pressure washer, though there is STILL some paint left! I've stopped using the stripper and will just use a sander now. Interlux Pre-Kote and their Brightside one part paint ought to do the trick. I must sand and then sand,and then hope I can slather this stuff on per their instructions...it says a helper with a foam brush follows the initial roller stroke... Anyone with experience?-Please advise... NOTE:I have already removed EVERYTHING & filled all holes,etc...smoothing it with a sander is my next step before priming w/PRE-KOTE. It said I ought to sand it again and use a chemical agent before paint application...but the store was out of Interlux #333 chemical "brushing agent". I will check again next visit... It is very cool to see all of these larks still running around.

I inherited a 1973 Aqualark from my grandfather, at the time it didnt run.

I rebuilt the carb, put an ignition coil on it, and it runs perfectly, first pull every time.

The one difference from every other lark ive seen is that i dont have a windshield, nor does it look like one was ever there.

I just rebuilt the seat, replaced the original steering cable last year, and did some minor glass work under the gas tank.

Just wanted to say there is yet another one out there!!!

Hi-Thanks for your post! It is interesting to find one of these mini-boats from the 70s,is that correct? Check your HID#,mine is at the starboard transom... ALSO-yours does not have a hatch,and I am wondering if your tank may be embedded beneath the deck? All of mine had the hatch behind the seat,and so I was able to but a swivel seat on top...fighting position,and able to use a foot controlled troller on the deck while fishing. I have since sold the bimini top, but I have never had a windshield. That is an extra option,as well as rails,lights,and plumbing...I have just purchased a blower for the hatch,which is where my tank is placed-it's just a portable,but I think the blower is now necessary in NJ,even in the lakes...ventilation has become required for closed compartments... That is a great color!-What motor is on it now?

 

Actually, looking at the tag, made me remember that this boat was made by Tamco, not Zamco, but is still an aqualark. The tag has the model number and all that, and the other number is XX-173-XXXX. I dont remember what the X's were, but the -173- looks like the year indication.

It does not have a hatch, but you fold the seat forward in order to look at, and fill the 6 gal steel tank - original i assume. It was really annoying to check the fuel level, and fill it, so i added an electronic guage, and bought a spare tank with a pump on the top.

The paint is original, just really polished and waxed, and i think the steering wheel is original, but the rubber coating is deteriorating, so it gets sticky, im thinking of wrapping it in rope.

The motor is also the original motor, a 1973 Mercury 200 (20HP) with thunderbolt ignition. still runs great and starts on the first pull!!!


Its still funny how many people just stare and comment on it, comparing it to a jetski usually.

Getting ready to take it out for a good run this weekend, hopefully everything will go well!!

I just purchased a small 8' powerboat very similar in design to the Aqua Lark and Addictor boats. It has no markings or info plates that I have found other than the word Escape in a stylized logo on both sides of the hull near the transome, and the name Attwood on the steering wheel. If anyone can provide me some information on this boat, please email me. Thanks.

Wow, I have looked everywhere for info on the little boat I picked up and finally Steve sounds like he might have something similar. Mine is all original and is a "Tamco Sea Lark". It has the bow tie steering wheel. The motor (rated at 20hp) actually is attached through the hull and is stationary. You steer with a rudder much like a paddle boat. Hatch in the front stores your gas tank.
The plate says Made by Tamco in Windsor, Ontario but any internet searches on that name bring up nothing about boats. I noticed that Virginia Larker stated that his Lark was made by Tamco. Ignition start and the engine looks like a 20 hp Johnson but it needs to be replaced.
I'm guessing this is a pretty rare machine and would love to hear if anyone else possesses one or has anymore information on it.

 

I am glad I found this place. Brings back great memorys. My first boat was a red Aqua Lark Sport. I put a 20 hp mercury on it. Mine was rated for 7.5 hp, and the dealer would not mount or hook up the engine. We had alot fo fun with that little boat, and learned how to water ski behind it.
I had been to Disney in FL with my family in 1975. Thats where I first saw the little boats. I was 17 at the time and found one at a boat dealer in Evenstion IL. Would love to have one now, even tho I am 51. Great site.

I have found a capacity plate in Aqualark the I'm trying to restore it and I would like to know if this plate belong to the Aqualark.

1984 aqualark

I have what I believe is a 1984 aqualark. It is a sit on top single seat 8' boat. I too am having dificulty finding info on these boats. Has anyone seen a lark like this one? All I have seen are the two seaters. What are the different models?

tell me what i have

i think i may have some version of an aqualark. the last # in the serial is 79? it has been my project for the past year. i am new here, but found this while looking for info, so i thought i'd join and share what ive found. here are some pics of the early stages of the project if they work. i need to find what kind of rubrail to use to seal off the hulls. my email is evans2524@gmail.com this boat has come a long way so far, more pics to come

The front sure looks like an Aqua Lark, but the back doesn't look like mine. Could be a knockoff, like an Addictor.
